You will definitely see at least one Optima, is it just a GT or not? If the nameplate is not visible, how can you distinguish Optima in this configuration from cheaper versions?

Korean trick: in addition to the specified configuration, there is also a GT Line very similar to it. The main difference between them, of course, is in the engines (on the GT Line there is a weaker naturally aspirated 2.4 GDI with a capacity of 188 hp), but there are also external differences.

From the front, the LED headlights are the first sign of a true GT. By the way, not all manufacturers condescend to install washers with LED light (they usually do it with xenon), but Optima has washers. “Lovely, just lovely,” as one of my acquaintances a crow used to say in a famous cartoon about a nihilistic parrot.

The second distinctive feature is the 18-inch alloy wheels with 235/45 tires. They are very similar on the GT Line, but our car has a twist that can be seen through these same alloy wheels: red brake calipers. And on the GT Line they are red only in front, and our GT is so sporty and aggressive that the calipers of the same color are on the back. Beauty - you can't take your eyes off.

Otherwise, the GT Line and GT are the same on the outside. Therefore, to find a few more differences, we will have to open the door and sit in the salon.

What makes any Optima happy is the size of the cabin. They did not save on space, and it is better for a person with geographic cretinism (and there are such people) to take a compass with him to the salon. But it's especially nice that this whole really huge passenger compartment is made of high-quality materials, so the usual question in such cars (damn it, why should I pay almost two million?) I did not have. The interior here was painted by a person with a good sense of taste, and not with an excess of plastic under the "piano lacquer" in the warehouse.


And at the same time, a reference to the German classics is felt in the interior: the center console is turned towards the driver, the top line of the doors follows the line along the bottom of the windshield, forming one whole with them. Classics - that's why it's a classic to repeat it periodically. The main thing is that it all looks appropriate and does not look like a cheap copy. In a word, we put a solid A for the salon, sit down in a chair and try to evaluate the fit and ergonomics.

Everything and a little more

The first thing you touch in the car is the chair. And it pleases in Optima: the range of adjustments allows you to sit down as comfortably as possible, and the memory for two positions makes it possible for two drivers to drive without much hassle. There are no complaints about the chair itself, it is quite rigid, but with good lateral support, a long pillow and - what is especially important for us - the GT lettering.


The steering wheel is another feature of our equipment. Its feature is the thinning of the rim over the side spokes and, of course, the cut at the bottom. To be honest, I didn't like those thin areas above the spokes - maybe my feet are too big for the thin areas of the rim. But the rest of the steering wheel is very good, and one cannot help but notice how organically it echoes with the chairs: leather with red stitching looks not so sporty, but somehow serious and even expensive. Of course, the automatic transmission selector is also "dressed" in the same leather with stitching.






In addition to leather, aluminum is also used in the interior decoration. And it looks much more expensive than plastic "wood" inserts. In general, the interior is very different from what Korean business sedans have taught us. Here, finally, everything is done thoughtfully, with taste and from really good materials. Although, of course, the leather on the upholstery of the doors and panels is only called leather, but this substitute also looks quite decent.


It would be a crime to build such a car and not install a panoramic sunroof. The Koreans did not go to it, so these things are also in the GT, which makes the interior seem even larger and more spacious.

From joy to refueling

We start the engine with a button. We start it - and we don't hear anything: the sound insulation is very good, and, looking ahead, I will say that the car is also very quiet on the move. So, what engine did we just start up?


Engine

2.0 l, 245 hp

Our engine is a 2-liter unit of the Theta-II series with direct fuel injection. Not only do we look at GDI with caution, but it is also turbocharged. Yes, this unit causes fear, partly even deservedly - we will dwell on this issue in the next article about Optima, which will be devoted to maintenance and repair. But why not leave aside gloomy thoughts about the turbine and fuel injection pump and just enjoy driving? Yes Easy!

A distinctive feature of this motor is a huge range of maximum torque. The latter is 350 Nm and is available at 1,400 to 4,000 rpm. Maximum power - 245 HP at 6,000 rpm. This beast accelerates to the first hundred in 7.4 seconds. There is no data on the acceleration speed to 200 km / h, but there is a maximum speed. And its magnitude is 240 km / h. Unfortunately, I personally could not verify this fact, but the Optima GT gains 200 km / h easily (here I felt ashamed and I blushed).

So the engine is running. We have an automatic box (this configuration is not required for another), so we translate the selector and get under way.

Immediately, we note: the noise in the car did not increase, and leaving the tight parking lot did not become a difficult task, although the dimensions of the car are decent (4 855/1 860/1 485 mm). Cameras, of which there are two - both in front and behind, help to partly boldly ride in tight spaces. The review "from above" is implemented, however, traditionally in Korean, nondescript, but in general the cameras cope with the tasks. What else is there to help the driver?

What's in this car at a glance: Blind Spot Assist (BSD), Reverse Exit Parking Assist (RCTA), Automatic Windshield Defogger, Rain Sensor, Intelligent Auto Parking, Electric Parking Brake (EPB) ) with Autohold function. The list is far from complete, but I have no intention of copying the equipment brochure here. But what I have highlighted, for various reasons, deserves a more detailed consideration.


Acceleration to 100 km / h

7.4 seconds

The blind spot monitoring system on Optima is almost a necessity: I have not had to deal with such flawed mirrors for a long time. Maybe someone clever can explain to me why they are made of this shape, with a cut off the top corner? I can somehow come to terms with the lack of a bottom corner, but when a very useful mirror area is sacrificed to design, I feel sad. When reversing, the mirrors can automatically tilt downward. But they are so narrow that this capability makes the driver completely blind. Well, when rebuilding in tight traffic, the BSD system is often useful.

Regarding the automatic windshield fogging prevention system, and the entire Optima climate system, the following must be said. I usually don't like the way the climate control works in Koreans. He either tries to burn his face or freeze him - there is no middle ground for him. But in Optima (it's still a business class!) It works as expected. But there is also a drawback - it is a very noisy work. If you start adding fan speed, it looks like an old vacuum cleaner is turning on somewhere. And it sucks the nobility of the GT completely. Here is the same trouble with the fogging of the windshield: it is worth directing air at it and making its flow a little stronger, as the howl of the wind rises, which does not allow using some options with pleasure.


I somehow quickly lost interest in all kinds of car parkers: they work slowly, they look for much more places than they really need, and in a city they are usually completely useless. But Optima's intelligent automatic parking system surprised me with its adequacy. Its only drawback is the disregard for what is happening on the opposite side of the parking lot. Fully surrendering to the desire to take an empty seat, Optima fearlessly turns the steering wheel. And if the road is narrow, then it is ready to ram cars (or a wall) from the opposite side. In a word, rely on the system, but do not make a mistake yourself.


But many other things (rain sensor, Autohold function, navigation system with 8-inch display) work perfectly. An unpleasant aftertaste only remained from the inoperative driver's window regulator closer: it worked, then it didn't. Moreover, I did not notice the logic in his behavior.


But back to the trip.

At high revs with active pedaling, the motor is still audible. But this does not bother: active driving presupposes the presence of at least some kind of sound response from the motor. If you put the car in sport mode, and tug the paddle shifters of the box with your fingers, then Optima becomes a very lively car. Rubber does not allow to fully appreciate the dynamics: it lacks a grip, and it begins to grind. But even without this, it is clear that the letters GT are here for a reason.


And yet the GT element is the track. Relaxing comfortably in the seat, you can tirelessly devour hundreds of kilometers, and at the same time - entertain yourself with music from the Harman / Kardon audio system with ten speakers (including a subwoofer). You can also connect your phone to it via Bluetooth. Everything works quickly, the touchscreen display with adequate responses and a human interface is also pleasing. The only inconvenience can arise if you get too carried away looking at the sky through the panoramic roof: on a sunny day, it makes the cabin too sunny in the cabin, and nothing is visible on the display. But this is already nit-picking.


In general, the six-speed gearbox does the job too. It's hard to call it delicate, switching in city mode is very noticeable. But it works predictably, and I will not complain about it.

Unfortunately, our roads are very far from ideal. Fortunately, the Optima has an amazing suspension. They did not skimp on the rear multi-link (as, for example, on the new Hyundai Elantra with its beam), which is great. The car not only does not wag its back with or without reason, but also does not pay attention to the rut. Yes, this is exactly the "Gran Turismo" on which you want to travel.


This is facilitated by the consumption of gasoline: the 70-liter tank was just enough to pick up the car in Moscow and drive to the center of St. Petersburg (this is about 730 kilometers). But in the city ... In the city, I would not trust the readings of the on-board computer. This digital partisan, even under torture, did not show me more than 10.5 liters per hundred kilometers. In fact, the consumption was at least 15 liters, and maybe even a little more.

By the way, there is another story connected with gasoline. The instructions indicate the requirement for gasoline: AI-92 / AI-95. On the tank flap - AI-92. What? "Ninety-second" gasoline in a direct injection GDI engine? Come on! I poured both such and such. There is no difference in consumption or dynamics. But something tells me that this engine is not too happy with 92nd gasoline.

Overall, the Kia Optima GT is a very interesting car. A very good interior, excellent handling, maximum comfort, decent dynamics - that's all about Optima. But how long the Jidiay will last, and even on the gasoline recommended by the manufacturer, is a big question. And if they do not ask themselves, then this car is definitely worth its money (1 809 thousand).

Despite the fact that the fourth generation Optima is developed on the modernized platform of its predecessor, there are almost no interchangeable parts between the two models. For example, while the configuration of the doorways has been preserved, the A-pillars and B-pillars are now manufactured using advanced hot-stamping technology, and the share of high-strength steels in the body structure has increased from 20 percent to 51. The number of adhesive seams that join parts together, in addition to welding, is even more impressive: the total length was 21 meters, but now it is almost 120. As a result, the rigidity of the body increased by one and a half times, and its weight, at least slightly, but still decreased.

A similar picture is in the chassis design. The McPherson front suspension has a new subframe with different attachment points to the body and hubs with reinforced bearings, in the rear multi-link - the same thing, plus the changed kinematics due to the elongated trailing arms (which is why the wheelbase has grown by a centimeter). And in the GT version, more rigid silent blocks and an original steering mechanism are used, with an electric power steering mounted on a "rail" (in "civilian" modifications it is on the steering shaft), and a "shorter" gear ratio.

The two-liter turbo Optima GT, like the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated, belongs to the Theta II family, the history of which dates back to the World Engine project, implemented at the beginning of the century by the Chrysler-Hyundai-Mitsubishi consortium. Engines of different brands are not identical, but the architecture is common: these are aluminum "fours" with two camshafts, phase shifters and variable intake manifold. Two-liter units are "square", that is, the diameter of the cylinders is equal to the piston stroke (86 mm), and the 2.4-liter units are slightly "bored", 88x97 mm. Thus, the 188-horsepower G4KG engine on the new Optima can be considered a sibling of the 4V11 unit from Mitsubishi Outlander, adjusted for direct petrol injection instead of distributed one. And the top-end turbocharged G4KH is called a technical clone of the famous 4V11T from the latest generation of the cult Lancer Evolution, although the engines differ significantly both in individual elements and in operational characteristics, for example, in the volume of engine oil.

The two-liter engine, basic for the Russian specification, belongs to the more recent Nu family, which has a smaller cylinder diameter (81 mm) and a double variable valve timing system. But the automatic transmission of the two aspirated engines is common, with the designation A6MF2, while the turbocharged Optima GT is equipped with an A6LF2 transmission capable of “digesting” more torque. Classic six-speed hydromechanical "automatic machines" since 2009 have replaced "five-step" copied from Mitsubishi boxes, and they got rid of "childhood diseases" long ago. By the way, Hyundai-Kia is one of the few automakers that produce “automatic machines” on their own, rather than ordering them on the side.
