A trifle - but the impeccable image of a German premium, where everything is clear without instructions and does not require adaptation, somehow immediately faded.

A game of shadows

The engine line is the same. The V8 versions of the GLS 500 and AMG GLS 63 added 20 and 28 horsepower (now 455 and 583 horsepower, respectively). But who will feel this increase? Unless it's soulless measuring electronics. The three-liter V6 engines remained the same: 258 hp. (diesel) and 333 hp. (petrol). The heavy fuel engine will again come to Russia in a derated version of up to 249 horsepower. We were able to drive only versions with “sixes”. Each is good in its own way. Diesel is not greedy for fuel (it eats almost half as much as its gasoline counterpart), and its thrust is enough for the eyes. The petrol GLS 400 knows how to pretend to be an athlete. Having switched the Dynamic Select system to “sport” mode, I enjoyed the groovy growl of the exhaust and slight throttle shifts when changing gears.

The Mercedes AMG GLS 63 remains with the same seven-speed automatic transmission, while all other versions now sport a new nine-speed gearbox. It is not difficult to guess its main purpose - it is to reduce fuel consumption. Claimed benefit for gasoline cars up to 0.5 l/100 km. But this is a minuscule amount! One awkward press on the gas pedal - and all the savings go down the drain. But I can’t say anything more, because old machine gun knew how to shift gears smoothly and quickly.

Soft nature

Mandatory for GLS Airmatic air suspension does not need compliments - it provides passenger comfort! But the desire to play around on the Austrian serpentines was quickly discouraged by the laws of physics and tuning rear suspension. Comfort? Soft manners? Breed sense? The car has all this. But what is the advantage of the mastodon GLS over the more compact ML/GLE model, besides its dimensions and status? This is a mystery to me, because the interior, set power units and the options are almost identical.

But I’m looking for a rational grain. But buyers with tight wallets are not overcome by such thoughts. In 2012–2013, the GL outsold the Mercedes ML by 15–17%. In 2014 they had parity. And in the first half of this year, the advantage of the older model exceeded 20%. This ratio will certainly be supported by the GLS, which will reach our market this spring.

Closer to an altitude of 2700 meters, the clean asphalt began to disappear under a layer of snow. As soon as we entered a slippery section of the road, she recommended that we turn on a mode that would allow us to move more safely slippery road. In this mode, the car immediately begins to behave differently. The car's throttle response becomes strictly limited, and steering gets tougher.
