Technical characteristics of Mitsubishi Outlander - engines, fuel consumption, all-wheel drive scheme

The technical characteristics of the Mitsubishi Outlander are determined by three options for the power plants used. Two petrol “fours” of 2.0 and 2.4 liters produce 146 and 167 hp. respectively. At the top of the engine line is the 3.0-liter V6 engine provided for the version Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. It develops a maximum power of 230 hp. and generates a torque of 292 Nm (at 3750 rpm).

The top modification of the Outlander involves installing a 6-speed gearbox in pair with the power unit automatic transmission transmission Other versions of the crossover are equipped with an eighth-generation Jatco CVT with a torque converter. V6 tandem 230 hp and 6 automatic transmission provides sports version Outlander has good dynamics - the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. The crossover variant, which hides either of a pair of 4-cylinder units under the hood, cannot boast of such agility, spending more than 10 seconds on the dash to “hundreds”.

Average consumption Mitsubishi Outlander fuel varies from 7.3 to 8.9 liters. The most “insatiable”, of course, is the 3.0-liter “six”, according to the passport data, consuming about 12.2 liters of fuel in the urban cycle.

Geometric parameters car bodies are interesting primarily due to the equality of approach and departure angles, each of which does not exceed 21 degrees. The angle of the ramp has the same meaning. The ground clearance (clearance) of the Mitsubishi Outlander is 215 mm.

The Japanese crossover is available in front- and all-wheel drive versions. Front-wheel drive is provided only for versions with a “younger” 2.0-liter engine. All-wheel drive has two possible configurations: All Wheel Control (AWC) and Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC). The second option, which adds stability in high-speed corners and on slippery surfaces, was developed specifically for the Outlander Sport 3.0.

Mitsubishi Outlander all-wheel drive system

All Wheel Control (AWC) is a front-wheel drive configuration in which rear axle connected using an electronically controlled electromagnetic coupling. Up to 50% of the thrust can be directed rearward. There are three operating modes of the AWC drive – ECO, Auto and Lock. In economy mode, all torque is transferred to the front axle by default, and the rear axle is used only when slipping. Auto mode distributes force in an optimal way, based on the data received by the electronic unit (wheel speed, accelerator pedal position). Lock mode increases the amount of torque transmitted to the rear wheels, which guarantees confident acceleration and more stable behavior on unstable surfaces. The main difference between Lock and Auto is that the rear wheels initially receive more traction regardless of whether slip is detected or not.

Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) is an advanced variation of the conventional AWC, in which an active differential (AFD) is installed on the front axle, distributing the force between the wheels. Thus, an additional mechanism for monitoring the behavior of the car appears. The S-AWC involves the stabilization system, ABS, electric power steering and brake system. Yes, the control unit Super system All Wheel Control can, under certain conditions, initiate wheel braking, for example, in the event of drift when cornering.

Operating mode selector all-wheel drive S-AWC has four settings: Eco, Normal, Snow and Lock. The “Snow” mode optimizes the system settings for driving in slippery surface.

Review of the new 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander

The Japanese brought the new, third generation of the Mitsubishi Outlander crossover to Europe, to the Geneva Motor Show held in March 2012. There's nothing you can do, you need to be closer to the consumer, because European sales the second generation Outa amounted to more than 130 thousand copies, add here more than 85,000 Outlanders sold in Russia. This is a serious number. For such love among Russians for the XL crossover, Mitsubishi representatives decided to “reward” Russian car enthusiasts. The start of sales of the new “Japanese” will begin in Russia, and only then new Mitsubishi The 2013 Outlander will go to Europe and America.

More new SUVs: Volkswagen Tiguan 2013 New Aktion Sang Yong 2013

Dimensions

The new product retained the proportions and dimensions of the body of the previous generation Outlander XL, but decreased in length by 1 cm. Due to smoother lines, it was possible to reduce the drag coefficient of air flow from 0.33Cx to 0.30Cx. The Japanese “adjusted” the new Mitsubishi Out 2013 to the M1G class (SUVs), by improving the body’s geometric cross-country ability (the approach and departure angles became larger). So the third generation of Outlander can be called a jeep, but just what to call it. Of the off-road attributes, only the body parameters are suitable for the jeep class; the all-wheel drive system remains conventional - a crossover.

  • External dimensions of the Mitsubishi Outlander 2013 are: length - 4655 mm, width - 1800 mm, height - 1720 mm, wheelbase - 2670 mm.
  • The declared ground clearance of the new Out is equal to the actual one - 215 mm.

Exterior

The front part of the new crossover with a monumental “masculine” bumper, which occupies almost the entire “face” of the updated Mitsu Outlander.

At the bottom there is a front fairing with a practical black plastic trim that carefully covers the body elements. Spotlights for the fog lights were placed a little higher on stylish chrome inserts. The two-level air intake with a horizontal license plate strip does not look as aggressive as the powerful trapezoid of the previous generation, but its area is designed to ensure proper air flow to the radiator. Further, the visual review of the Outlander 2013 cannot help but dwell on the beautiful headlights of a complex shape with no less advanced filling (xenon with additional sections that improve the distribution of light flux), which support a hood with soft lines and a subtle stamping that forms a depression in the central part . Neat curved lines originate at the bottom of the bumper, rise increasing the volume, repeat the profile of the front lighting equipment, form a swelling of the arches and quickly merge into a characteristic rib that defines the entire sidewall of the body new Outlander. Even in the photo, the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander shows a somewhat heavy profile, the car seems to have gained weight. Smooth body lines, long hood, flat roof, large rear end. The body of the second generation Outlander was replete with sharp edges and pronounced wheel arches. In the case of the successor, the smoothness of the lines borders on sweetness.

The rear of the new Out is frankly boring, a bumper with crossover protection made of unpainted plastic, a large tailgate, modest lighting equipment, according to the design idea, connected to each other by a chrome trim. The third generation Mitsubishi Outlander has a somewhat bland and boring image.

Interior

Inside, it's a completely different matter; the interior of the new Out meets with high-quality finishing materials (soft, textured plastics and leather), thoughtful ergonomics and rich basic equipment with a wide range of options.

The front dashboard has a massive jeep shape with a pronounced orientation towards the driver. The convenient multifunctional steering wheel now has adjustment in two planes, an optitronic instrument panel with two dials and a centrally located screen on-board computer 4.2 inches in size, readings are perfectly readable in any lighting. On the center console there is a block multimedia system With touch screen(navigator, rear view camera), slightly lower controls for dual-zone climate control. The console goes into the transmission tunnel through supports in the form of supports.

Front seats with wide range adjustments in all directions, lateral support is acceptable (the driver does not feel pinched by the bolsters), electric drive and heating are available. To the driver and front passenger comfortable, plenty of space. Let's see what the interior of the new Mitsu Outlander 2013 is like for passengers in the second and third row of seats. The rear sofa has longitudinal adjustment, the backrest changes the angle of inclination. The second row can comfortably accommodate three adult passengers. There is enough space for your legs, your head is not propped up by the ceiling.

The option of a third row is considered the norm in the class mid-size crossovers, but sitting in the gallery in the new 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is better for children; adults will not be comfortable.

It is no secret that the dimensions of a car body are one of the most significant indicators when choosing a vehicle. Previously, it was believed that the larger the dimensions, the more difficult it is to drive a car on the road, especially if it is used in urban conditions. Now, even if the car is large, thanks to the latest developments in the industry, this may not affect the quality and ease of operation at all. But in large urban crossovers, the driver and passengers feel more protected, and appearance The vehicle can be confidently called presentable and impressive.

This article will talk about the dimensions of the Mitsubishi Outlander depending on the generation. There will also be Comparative characteristics, in order to determine what changes were made to the appearance of the car and its technical characteristics during the development of the model. The dimensions of the Outlander are traditionally measured using three parameters - taking into account the length, width and height of the body. It must be remembered that when calculating the height, in order to find out the dimensions of the Mitsubishi Outlander, you need to take the distance from the ground to the most extreme point of the body, but you should not pay attention to the roof rails. All generations of Outlander have different dimensions, as well as different vehicle weights - the minimum is 1415 kg, and the maximum is 1900 kg.

Dimensions of 1st generation cars

The Mitsubishi Outlander first went on sale in 2003 in Europe and the United States of America. At that time, a similar model had been actively sold on the Japanese market for more than two years, only it had a different name - Mitsubishi Airtrack. Buyers were offered vehicles with gasoline power plants, and 2004 was marked by the fact that the manufacturer released a version with a turbo engine, which allowed the car to accelerate to 202 hp. With.

The first generation was relatively small in size, if we compare it with other generations that appeared much later. Of course, engineers actively worked to ensure that, by increasing the dimensions of the Mitsubishi Outlander, they provided additional spaciousness and comfort to passengers in the cabin. You can see the characteristics in the table below:

Second generation with XL prefix

The first generation was sold until the beginning of 2006, despite the fact that the manufacturer had announced the release of a new and improved car a year earlier. The production of the second generation was carried out by production facilities in Japan, but already in 2010 it took over production Russian plant in Kaluga, which fully provided the assembly of cars for the domestic market. The second generation was larger in size, received the XL prefix and was offered to customers in several modifications.

At first glance at the car, it becomes clear that it has become much larger than its predecessor in length and width. In addition, the shape of the body has changed somewhat, resulting in improved aerodynamic characteristics.

External dimensions (II generation)

Internal dimensions (II generation)

It was this car that became the best-selling of the company’s entire model range, because, despite the increase in size, it was easy to drive and had good road stability, regardless of the quality of the surface and weather conditions.

Third generation in a new body

The third generation seems to have virtually nothing in common with its predecessors. The body size has become an order of magnitude larger, even when compared with the Outlander XL. The manufacturer increased the length by 25 millimeters and made the car squat by 40 millimeters. You can find information online that the vehicle is offered in two versions – with five and seven seats. However, in Russia, you can only find a five-seater Mitsubishi Outlander. This is largely due to the negligible demand for such modifications among our compatriots (due to the fact that five-seater SUVs already cope well with their assigned functions). Thanks to the fact that engineers carefully refined the geometry of the internal space, the model has become much more comfortable and the amount of free space has increased.

In addition, the volume of the luggage compartment has also changed. The third generation of the car can accommodate up to 1740 liters. cargo is required, which allows us to draw a conclusion about the adaptation of the vehicle for long trips out of town and traveling long distances. Changes in body height are largely explained by the urgent need to improve aerodynamic performance. The specialists did a great job, because in the 2012 SUV they managed to reduce the drag coefficient by a record seven percent, from 0.36 to 0.33. This contributed to a reduction in fuel consumption compared to its predecessor XL by more than 10%.

Dimensions:

  • Car length (III generation) – 4655 millimeters (15 millimeters more);
  • The body width is the same, 1800 millimeters;
  • The height of the vehicle decreased by 40 millimeters and amounted to 1,680 millimeters;
  • Ground clearance – 215 millimeters.

Drawing conclusions

With each generation of Mitsubishi Outlander, the size of vehicles became larger. The largest representative of the line is the improved third generation car, released in 2012. It is offered to customers in five-seater and seven-seater versions and has very good aerodynamic performance and looks presentable.

Dimensions of the Mitsubishi Outlander car updated: September 19, 2017 by: dimajp

The XL prefix in the name of the second generation Mitsubishi Outlander emphasizes that this car is larger than its predecessor. Five years of experience in operating the machine in Ukraine will allow you to evaluate how correct the “new size” turned out.

Mitsubishi Outlander XL (2007-2012 model year) from $17,300 to $33,000

Even externally, the Mitsubishi Outlander XL looks larger than its predecessor, and the aggressive cut of the front and rear optics gives its image more dynamism. Almost all models were brought to Ukraine by official dealers of the brand.

These cars are 5-seater, and rarely seen European versions could be 7-seater (a third row of seats is installed in the trunk). At the end of 2010, a restyling was carried out: changes affected the front part, made in the spirit of the Lancer X.

As operating experience has shown, there are no complaints about the corrosion resistance of the Outlander XL. The condition of the body parts does not cause them either. The peculiarity of the rear windshield wiper is the individual design of the “brush”, which is why it is impossible to choose a non-original one (a branded part costs about 300 UAH).

Minced meat and space

Many Outlander XLs are very well equipped. The interior looks modern, and the sportiness is given by two instrument panels facing the driver, a three-spoke steering wheel and decorative inserts on the dashboard, door cards and steering wheel, painted in silver. The interior is comfortable even for tall people, and the sliding design of the rear split seats (they move backwards/forwards on a slide) will help adjust the amount of legroom for gallery passengers. Promote a comfortable fit and adjust the backrests of the rear seats. At the same time, some owners complain about a knocking sound in the front passenger seat (when there is no person in it), which is eliminated by adding lubricant.

The predecessor was often criticized for its small trunk. The creators of the Outlander XL took this into account and, due to the increased overall dimensions of the model, allocated much more space for cargo - 774/1691 liters versus 420/1100 liters Outlander first generations. Moreover, to make folding easier rear seats they were equipped with a special mechanism that automatically throws the seats forward when you press the corresponding lever.

Only petrol

Officially, we were supplied only gasoline modifications Outlander XL. All power units are equipped with the proprietary MIVEC variable valve timing system, individual coils and spark plugs with iridium electrode tips. Experts note that it is undesirable to operate these units on gas, since the MIVEC system is not friendly with it - there have been cases of burnout of the intake and exhaust valve seats.

The 3.0-liter unit is demanding on fuel quality. Due to the use of bad gasoline, catalysts are the first to suffer. Moreover, this engine has three of them: two front and one rear (1 original - about 10 thousand UAH). You cannot simply remove unusable catalysts - the ECU cannot be “deceived” by installing lambda probe simulators. The top-end engine is perfect for active driving - it confidently accelerates a more than one and a half ton car to the first “hundred” in 9.7 seconds. True, the car owner will have to pay for this with considerable fuel consumption - about 14 liters per 100 km in the urban cycle.

Among the malfunctions of the 2.4-liter unit, we note the loss of tightness of the crankshaft front oil seal. No other characteristic problems were identified in the Mitsubishi Outlander XL units during operation.

The timing belt of the 3.0-liter engine is equipped with a belt that must be changed along with the rollers every 80 thousand km. All other engines use a durable metal chain that lasts the entire service life of the unit. Peculiarity fuel system, which increases the cost of servicing all engines, is that the fine fuel filter is made together with a submersible flask, so it is not cheap ( original spare part will cost 1700 UAH). According to factory recommendations, the filter should be changed every 60 thousand km. The “pump” will last about 150 thousand km.

Weak points of the car

Do not heat!

On the Outlander XL, different types of gearboxes were used depending on engine size. “Mechanics” and a continuously variable CVT were coupled with 2.0 liter and 2.4 liter engines, and the top 3.0 liter was only available with a classic torque converter “automatic”.

As a rule, “mechanics” and “automatics” serve without problems. You just need to change the lubricant in a timely manner - every 40-45 thousand km in the manual transmission and after 40 thousand km in the automatic transmission. However, the variator can disturb - in extreme heat during long driving high speeds the oil in it overheats, which will be indicated by a warning light on the instrument panel. IN in this case You must stop immediately, and you can continue driving only after the lubricant has cooled. The lubricant change interval in the variator is every 80 thousand km.

Main difference all-wheel drive transmission this vehicle can only be used front wheel drive(in its predecessor, all-wheel drive was always engaged automatically when the front wheels slipped). The Outlander XL has three modes: 2WD (front-wheel drive only), 4WD (all-wheel drive is automatically connected using an inter-axle electromagnetic clutch, capable of changing the distribution of torque along the axles from 85:15 to 40:60 depending on the traction of the wheels with the road) and Lock (clutch is firmly locked). By the way, the cheapest 2.0-liter versions with manual transmission are single-wheel drive, although such cars are very rare. The Multi-Select 4WD all-wheel drive works in conjunction with the MASC dynamic stability control and MATC traction control systems, which simulate inter-wheel locks when off-road and also contribute to better stability car when driving along slippery roads and active cornering.

During operation, problems with all-wheel drive operation Outlander transmissions XL not identified.

Tough but confident

Compared to its predecessor, the Outlander XL suspension has become stiffer, but thanks to these settings, you can drive this car dynamically with more confidence. Although the chassis is structurally similar: in front is an independent McPherson, in the rear is a multi-link. Both axles are equipped with anti-roll bars.

In general, the suspensions are durable, and most often you will have to change the stabilizer bushings (40 thousand km of the front and 60 thousand km of the rear). The struts last much longer - about 150 thousand km, the ball joints of the front levers - about 200 thousand km (branded ones are supplied with the lever), and the silent blocks, which are changed separately, - 120 thousand km (front) and 150 thousand. km (rear). In the rear “multi-link”, the lower silent blocks of the transverse arms serve the least (about 100 thousand km). The “rubber bands” of the remaining levers “hold” for 150-200 thousand km. During operation, you should check and adjust the installation angles of not only the front, but also the rear wheels. Otherwise, after 60 thousand km, the bolts of the eccentric bushings of the rear camber arms “boil”, as a result of which, if adjustment is necessary, they have to be cut off with a grinder and new levers installed. Based on operating experience, the front shock absorbers last less than the rear ones, and most often the front left one becomes unusable by 100 thousand km.

Rack and pinion steering Outlander XL is equipped with power steering. The weak point of this unit is the hoses, which after 100 thousand km sometimes begin to “sweat” at the junction of the rubber parts and aluminum tips. Steering ends do not last long (60-70 thousand km) on our roads, but the rods can withstand about 150 thousand km.

The Outlander XL brake system must be regularly maintained: at each maintenance, lubricate the caliper guides, otherwise they may jam, which causes uneven wear of the pads.

Worth trying...

The XL size of the second generation Outlander was liked by many Ukrainian buyers, and time has shown that this car is generally practical, comfortable and, very importantly, quite reliable. If all operating rules are followed, it rarely creates problems for its owners, so it is highly recommended for purchase on the secondary market.

Driver - about Mitsubishi Outlander XL

Previously I drove a Mitsubishi Space Star. However, a constant problem was that access to my dacha was difficult, so there was a need to buy a car with all-wheel drive and better cross-country ability. I considered Mitsubishi Outlander XL, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai as candidates. Outlander XL is the largest in size, and with my build I find it most comfortable. And the price was the most attractive. I like the good equipment and functionality of the car: the trunk is very roomy, and I often carry various loads in it, the folding design of the trunk lid is convenient in nature - you can sit on the bottom one, and the top one, like a roof, protects from the rain. Thanks to the sliding rear seats, even tall people can easily fit in the cabin, and good cross-country ability always helps out when traveling to the countryside or into nature. True, I often got stuck, and the road tires of my car played a significant role in this. During operation, I only replaced the steering tips and sharpened the brake discs (they were damaged by temperature changes). There were no other problems with the car, and I have no plans to sell it in the near future.

Summary

Body and interior

Dynamic appearance. Modern design salon Rich equipment many cars. Sliding rear seats allow you to increase trunk volume or additional space for passengers. Convenient folding rear seats. Large trunk. There is no alternative to the branded rear brush. Plastic creaks in the cabin, problems with standard radio, rear power windows (until 2011). There may be a knock in the front passenger seat and fogging of the rear optics.

Powertrain and transmission

In general, the engines and gearboxes are reliable. Good dynamics of 3.0-liter versions. To save fuel, the transmission allows driving only in front-wheel drive. Lack of economical diesel versions on the market. The MIVEC variable valve timing system is not friendly with gas equipment. Demanding on fuel quality and high fuel consumption (3.0 l). The crankshaft front oil seal (2.4 l) may leak and the oil in the CVT variator may overheat. Expensive fuel filter.

Suspension, steering, brakes

The stiffer suspension contributes to better stability. A good resource for most of its “consumables”. Fragility of tie rod ends. With improper maintenance, the bolts of the eccentric bushings of the rear camber arms “boil” and the caliper guides become wedged.

The Toyota RAV4 costs more than the Outlander XL. The RAV4 is offered in two versions with a standard and long wheelbase. The most common versions are with 2.0 and 2.4 liter petrol engines, automatic transmission and CVT. All-wheel drive RAV4 is connectable: the rear axle is activated using an inter-axle electromagnetic clutch when the front wheels slip. The functions of cross-wheel “diffs” are simulated electronically. Unlike the Outlander XL and X-Trail, the transmission does not provide front-wheel drive only.

Most often under Nissan hood X-Trail is equipped with 2.0 and 2.5 liter petrol engines with automatic transmission. Thanks a lot ground clearance and a soft, energy-intensive suspension, the Nissan model is most suitable for driving off asphalt roads. Nissan's all-wheel drive is also connectable: it is possible to drive only in front-wheel drive, in automatic mode, when the center electromagnetic clutch engages the rear wheels when the front wheels slip, as well as with a rigidly locked clutch.

Mitsubishi Outlander – small crossover, developed in Japan. It is a compact SUV, as well as one of the competitors of the Nissan X-Trail, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sorento, Opel Antara, Dodge Journey and other crossovers. The model was presented at the Japanese Auto Show in 2001, and in 2003 the car entered the North American market. In Japan the car was called Mitsubishi Airtrek.

The engine range for the first generation Outlander was represented by two power plants - 2.0 and 2.4 liters. Last motor developed 160 horsepower.

Mitsubishi Outlander SUV

Despite the fact that sales of the second generation Mitsubishi Outlander began in 2005, sales of the very first Outlander did not stop, including on the Russian market. In addition, for some time the first Outlander was one of the most affordable representatives of the SUV class. The second version received a new design concept and more modern options. In addition, the crossover was already equipped with all-wheel drive as standard. Available transmissions are manual, automatic and CVT. The range of engines consisted of a basic 2.4-liter internal combustion engine with a power of 170 hp. s., as well as a 220-horsepower three-liter engine.

Mitsubishi sold since 2012 Outlander third generations. The car received the Ultimate, Intense, Inform, Instyle and Invite configurations. Basic version– with a 2.4-liter internal combustion engine with a capacity of 167 “horses”. There is also a more economical version 2.0 with 146 liters. With. The top-end configuration is with a three-liter 230-horsepower internal combustion engine. In 2014, sales of the updated modification started. For the first time, Outlander was equipped with a hybrid two-liter engine producing 121 hp. With. After restyling, a more affordable front-wheel drive version appeared.

The Japanese crossover at the start of production back in 2001 had the name Airtrek, but along with subsequent restyling it received its current name Mitsubishi Outlander. The world saw the third generation of this model for the first time a month before the presentation in Geneva in 2012.

And Russia became the first country where production of the car began, because this country is an important consumer for Japanese exports. In 2015, the Outlander was updated again, adding or changing more than a hundred details, mostly on the exterior.

In March of the same year, production began at the Kaluga Automobile Plant, and in April sales began in all Mitsubishi car dealerships in Russia. During the time that the Mitsubishi Outlander spent on the Russian car market, it managed to climb to the top of its class as one of the most popular crossovers in the country. The entire Mitsubishi model range.

Car history

1st generation (2001-2008)

Airtrack (the first name of the model) was shown for the first time in the summer of 2001 at a Japanese exhibition. It was possible to choose a power unit - it could be a 2.0 liter 4G63 engine or a 2.4 liter 4G64 engine. The latter option was synchronized with a 4-speed semi-automatic gearbox.

Mitsubishi Outlander x1 had a system with front and rear wheel drive. On the most strong model there was a power unit from Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (4G63T 2.0 liter). For its compatriots, the company provided for the use of old 2.0-liter units that met Japanese standards affecting the dimensions and volume of the power plant.

Mitsubishi Outlander 1st generation

But the dimensions of the car were clearly larger, so it was impossible to call the model “compact”. When 2003 arrived, the car became available for sale in North America. The car replaced the Mitsubishi Montero Sport and had a modified radiator grille and head optics.

These and other changes increased the length of the body by 130 millimeters. The "trolley" was taken from Mitsubishi Grandis, which began selling in 2003. At that moment, the most powerful 2.4-liter 4G69 SOHC unit came out, which had the MIVEC system. This motor replaced the 4G64. Already next year it was possible to install a 4G63T turbo engine.

In South America, the Outlander was known as the Montero Outlander. The company took this step so that the car would be associated with the flagship Mitsubishi Montero Sport. In total, almost 20,000 copies of the 1st generation Mitsubishi Outlander were sold in Russia. Below in this article you will find Mitsubishi Outlander 2017 configurations and prices, as well as a review of the new product.

2nd generation (2005-2012)

The next family completely removed the dilapidated name of the vehicle “Airtrek”. Moreover, this even affected the domestic Japanese market. The production of the crossover with the “2nd generation” specification began in 2005.

This is despite the fact that the 1st generation continued to be produced. The second Mitsubishi Outlander family was built on the basis of the GS. In general, the car was assembled in various countries around the world. Among the most large factories were: Japanese and Dutch. Since 2010, the company's management has organized the production of crossovers in Kaluga.

The 2nd family debuted in the Russian Federation in 2007. The car received the inscription “XL” in its name. This was not done for beauty, but spoke of increased dimensions and power.

The standard version was equipped with a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter engine and manual transmission. Sometimes they installed a variator. The drive depended on the goals and needs of buyers, so the car was front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Mitsubishi Outlander XL 2nd generation

The technical equipment in the 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander has increased, when the configuration had a 2.4-liter engine developing 170 “horses”. The power unit delivered all its power to all wheels. The most the most powerful crossover The 2nd family was a car with a V-shaped installation.

It was a 3.0-liter six-cylinder 223-horsepower naturally aspirated engine, which was paired with an automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. In total, 4 transmission options were available - 5-speed manual, CVT, 6-band automatic and 6-speed robotic gearbox.

The European market offered turbocharged models diesel engine German made(2.0 TDI). The crossover could be seven-seater (for American market) and five-seater (for our customers).

Front-wheel drive versions retained their places in the list of models, but all-wheel drive versions did not have a permanent all-wheel drive system. Therefore they had two new all-wheel drive systems TOD AWC and S-AWC.

The model with the S-AWC system differs from the base one in that it has a front active differential. Distributes torque between the front and rear axle in the AWC system multi-plate clutch electronic type.

Thanks to this, it was possible to make the drive to the front axle in “civilian” mode, and, if necessary, to forcibly redistribute it to 2 axles. Among the disadvantages is the possible occurrence of overheating of the coupling during active movement on a bad road. Because of this, the rear wheel drive is temporarily disabled.

When 2009 arrived, the Japanese crossover underwent modernization and acquired a different aggressive appearance. The car became similar to the Lancer car, as if recalling where the history of the model began.

A year later, the improved model began to be produced in the Russian Federation. In its own price niche, the Mitsubishi Outlander 2 was far ahead of its rivals. How? Rich equipment and powerful engine.

Updated 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander

The car sold well in other countries, but in the car market previously used they cannot be found too often (the exception is right-hand drive versions). It is interesting that, despite their considerable power, the power units did not have high fuel consumption, which was also their advantage.

When driving a 2.4-liter engine in the city without traffic jams, the engine consumes about 10-11 liters per 100 kilometers. For such an off-road model, this is an excellent indicator. It is clear that the three-liter version is more gluttonous, but everything is within the limits of what is permissible.

It is worth saying that the timing drive of the “four” has an almost eternal chain, while for the V-shaped “six”, with a mileage of 90,000 km, the belt is required to be replaced according to the regulations. The characteristics of the off-road version of the Mitsubishi Outlander are quite good.

If you look under the bottom, you won’t find anything sticking out of the elements that can be easily damaged. Only a full-size spare wheel installed in rear overhang, slightly impedes the geometric cross-country ability of the Japanese. By the way, due to the installation of a full-size spare wheel, the Outlander XL is not suitable for our market with a 3rd row of seats.

Although its “brothers” Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crossover have a seven-seater interior, paying “tribute” to the “dokatka”. In total, almost 90,000 2nd generation crossovers were sold in Russia. It is also common in our country Mitsubishi model Outlander XL.

Safety Mitsubishi Outlander 2

The vehicle performed well during crash tests. General security adult passengers were 4 stars. Safety during side impacts was especially noted. For ensuring the proper level of child safety, the car scored 3 out of 4 maximum stars.

Pedestrian safety was rated 2 stars. If we compare the model with the first generation, the second family has become larger in size and has an extended wheelbase. Thanks to the enlargement of the car, it was possible to increase the spaciousness of the cabin and install an additional 3rd row of seats in the trunk (this equipment was not available for the Russian Federation).

3rd generation (2012-present)

Finally, the 3rd family of Mitsubishi Outlander was shown to a wide audience in 2012 at the Geneva Auto Show. To put it bluntly, the new product was a profound change from the second version.

The model was built on an improved GS base. The third generation managed to maintain the list of engines and gearboxes that its predecessor had. The designers were able to increase the reliability of the vehicle’s design and add a full-fledged electric drive control system, which increased the cross-country ability of the new crossover.

The available options of the 3rd family include a hybrid Outlander version PHEV, which uses an electric motor as the main power unit, and a gasoline unit as an electric generator for the electric motor when the batteries run out.

In 2014, the Japanese crossover underwent a slight modernization, and the following year they introduced the restyled Mitsubishi Outlander 2015, which is still on sale. The 2015 restyling affected the appearance of the car.

It is noticeable that the company follows the new Dynamic Shield philosophy, which combines the powerful visual details of the Pajero and the aggressive qualities of the 2009 Outlander and Lancer family.

Exterior 3rd generation

The restoration of the Mitsubishi Outlander was a success and the updated crossover began to look more interesting and modern. This became possible thanks to the unique style from the Dynamic Shield company.

The new “nose” of the car laid the foundation for the design of a similar design for other Mitsubishi models. Two chrome lines are located between the headlights, organically fitting into the design of the front part, endowed with LED optics, which can optionally be supplemented with the same LED low beam.

And between those very lines there are three diamonds - the traditional logo of the corporation. Changes to the front bumper made it look like the grin of an animal and this, of course, had a positive effect on the overall exterior.

Although plastic was used for manufacturing, everything looks very high quality, being the same color as the body, the part is equipped with a black air intake, which is located under the modest radiator grille. An addition is the design, consisting of small chrome parts, which to some extent unite the entire “front” together.

The hood remains modestly minimalist. It has hard-to-see ribs connecting the front end to the windshield. On the side, the Outlander body, which received a restyle, acquired new wings that do not stand out much, but emphasize the dimensions.

The new “skirts” have a modern design and, together with the bumper, are made of plastic. Despite the presence of most of the parts made in chrome, the car does not look ridiculous, each element complements each other.

The stern of the updated Outlander has acquired new, larger marker lights with chopped edges and LED filling, a slightly changed tailgate and a new bumper with a powerful lining made of scratch-resistant black plastic.

The installation of new bumpers and the use of a new design feature Dynamic Shield in the design of the nose of the car changed the dimensions Japanese crossover. Rear optics, equipped with LEDs, is located partly on the corners of the body and partly on the trunk lid.

The door itself also began to look fresher. At the top it is decorated with a brake light made of six LEDs. The bumper was modernized by installing a black light trim, decorated with dimensions on the sides. Also, the bumper has become larger in size.

The material used in manufacturing is again plastic, but it is of high quality, and it takes a lot of effort to scratch it. The conclusion was exhaust pipes located on the sides of the rear of the car. Complementing all this, the model’s image becomes even more sporty.

Minor changes were made to the body dimensions: length 4655 mm; crossover width is 1.8 m; ground clearance, respectively, 21.5 cm; and the height of the Outlander is 1 m 68 cm. In addition to the updated design, the development team made the body more aerodynamic. Now the figures have improved by 7%.

This is made possible by changes to the rear and increased rake. windshield. The weight has been reduced by almost 100 kilograms through the use of higher quality and lighter materials.

Top versions run on alloy wheels 18 inches in diameter. The wheel design is accordingly exclusive to Dynamic Shield. The Mitsubishi Outlander 2015 model has become stylish, modern, dynamic and attractive.

3rd generation interior

In third Mitsubishi generation Outlander salon didn't change very much. The car's comfort has been improved by upgrading the equipment. The quality of materials has increased significantly, this is especially noticeable in the upholstery of seats and decoration details, but this has not affected the finishing of the interior itself.

Although plastic predominates inside, the elements made from it pleasantly please with the quality both in appearance and in tactile sensations. The color scheme of the interior has been expanded and organically developed.

In addition, a new steering wheel appeared, and the multimedia display along with the entire system was changed for the better. The deflectors remained in their old place. The top-end trim has an option that allows you to install a self-dimming rearview mirror.

Updated steering wheel

The gearbox control lever has received a new design. Despite its reduction in size, ease of use has increased. The rest remains laconic and convenient in Japanese.

The instruments are controlled from the console and the new screen, as well as using buttons on the steering wheel. The climate control control unit is located slightly lower. Everything is arranged rationally and ergonomically, allowing you to enjoy driving the Outlander.

As always, the entire interface is intuitive and easy to master. Complements this effect spacious salon, beautifully decorated with signature stitching. The texture of the seats has been changed. Having become smoother, they do not live up to the first impression.

Despite everything, the seats are very comfortable and keep their occupants in place even on sharp turns. Many cars of this class cannot boast of a wide rear sofa, but this is not about our hero.

Moreover, in our time it is rare to find a car interior in the back of which three large passengers can be accommodated at once. The backrest can be transformed into a 40 to 60 format, making it possible to expand the luggage compartment.

Luggage space with a volume of 477 liters or as much as 1640 liters when folding the rear row backrests. An option that will please Mitsubishi Outlander buyers with big family— the possibility of installing a third row of seats, but this also comes with a minus: the volume of the luggage compartment is reduced to minimum sizes. But all this, alas, is not for Russians; such a proposal can be found in other countries.

Specifications

Engine and transmission

In addition to updating the exterior and interior of the car, the modernization process also affected the power units. The third generation Mitsubishi Outlander is equipped with three different engines in four variants.

Each engine is provided with a MIVEC type valve timing control system and ECI-Multi distributed fuel supply:

  • The 2WD version with a driven front axle has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Operation of this engine at 6000 rpm provides a power of 146 horses, maximum torque is 196 N*m at 4200 rpm. All this works in tandem with the 8th generation Jatco CVT. You can easily accelerate to 100 km/h in 11.1 seconds, with a maximum of 193 km/h. Consumption in combined mode is approximately 7.2 liters per hundred kilometers.
  • 4WD drives all four wheels with the same number of cylinders. The wheels are driven by a 2.0-liter 146-horsepower engine with a maximum torque of 196 N*m. It works in conjunction with the latest generation CVT. Acceleration from zero to one hundred in 11.7 seconds, the maximum speed here is less - 188 km/h. Consumes an average of 7.6 liters per hundred.
  • The upgraded 4WD version remains all-wheel drive, but has increased in volume and is now 2.4 liters, which allows it to drive the equivalent of 167 horses with a torque of 222 N*m. The variator is the same - CVT 8th generation. In this case, it will take only 10.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 with a maximum speed of 198 km/h. Over 100 kilometers, the Outlander with this engine consumes approximately 7.7 liters.
  • The top version of the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is equipped with the most powerful 3.0-liter engine and cylinder arrangement - V6. All this gives the car 230 horses under the hood. The torque mark reaches 292 Newton meters. The engine operates under the control of an “automatic” with six gear levels. The dash from zero to 100 km/h will take only 8.7 seconds, maximum permissible speed 205 km/h. With top-end equipment, accordingly, consumption will be top-end, but not frighteningly high - on average, 9 liters per 100 kilometers. All all-wheel drive versions are equipped with a “smart” drive distribution system “Super All-Wheel Control”.

Suspension

Besides updated engines The rear shock absorbers have become new. Like most companies, Mitsubishi has equipped its crossover with McPherson strut suspension at the front and a multi-link system at the rear.

Steering

To make driving the crossover convenient and easy, the designers equipped the steering electric amplifier steering wheel.

Brake system

Supported by ABS, Brake Assist and EBD, the braking system features disc brakes on all wheels.

3rd generation security

In the Euro NCAP crash test, the indicators revealed a level of protection for adults inside occupants of 94% out of 100, respectively. This indicator makes the Mitsubishi Outlander one of the best in the safety rating.

Protection is guaranteed for the entire body of the driver and passengers, taking into account different types of body composition, location and even posture. In case of different types of accidents, the body structure and protective equipment provide maximum protection from injuries.

Euro NCAP crash test

In this case, the body is minimally deformed, while causing minimal harm to those inside, reducing the force of inertia. Note that the Outlander's roof can support five times the weight of the car itself.

In addition, even the most default version of the package is provided with various protection and security systems. Here is a detailed list of all security systems:
