Off-road: I constantly go fishing, and I try to turn the road into a small trophy raid. I'm not looking for easy ways. Excellent permeability. Entry-exit angles, ground clearance (excellent geometric cross-country ability) allow gullets, slides, ruts, ravines to boldly storm, never caught (though I didn't notice a hemp on the LC80 and crumpled the threshold there), but I have some experience now and I help the car head.

In general, if you do not put it on your belly, not pure road tires and be friends with your head will only get stuck where the others will not even reach. For full sensations, it accelerated to 80-90 on a freshly cut field. In winter, I rode on a snow-covered one, somewhere along the hub, a little higher than the snow - only positive emotions.

This engine has been produced for 30 years in a naturally aspirated version; in principle, one of the first diesel engines certified for Russia eats any solarium. In principle, these are two difficult places in the engine, the rest is super reliable. After all, it was installed back in the early nineties on the legendary Land Cruiser 70 and migrated almost unchanged to the utilitarian 105s. There is really nothing to talk about it: the engine runs quietly 500-800 thousand km without any major repair work. But the same volume, a more powerful counterpart is already a little more capricious: a turbodiesel with four valves per cylinder and direct injection is more demanding on the quality of fuels and lubricants, which is why the injection pump can fail at 150,000 km (which, in fact, modern engines never dreamed of ) and must be replaced if damaged. Also, a turbodiesel requires constant valve adjustment every 40 thousand km. And, perhaps, the main thing that should not be forgotten when servicing both diesel engines, in addition to changing the oil, is to change the timing belt every 120 thousand km. The most common gasoline V8 is perhaps more gluttonous than units running on heavy fuel (average consumption is about 20 liters versus 15 on diesel), but no less reliable: the 2UZ series engine is extremely durable and easily overcomes the half-million mark without overhaul.

TRANSMISSION

After about the same mileage, due to the abundance of reagents on the roads, cases of oxidation of the mechanisms for switching on the interaxle blocking are possible: if the center does not "dissolve", you need to go to the service. As for the gearboxes, the "mechanics" was installed only on the 105th "cruisers" and with regular oil changes (every 40-50 thousand km) can retire along with the engine - one clutch can serve more than 150-200 thousand . km. Automatic machines with four or five steps are no less hardy.

BODY AND UNDERWAY

During its history, the "cruiser" has undergone two restyling. In 2002, the SUV received new optics, a radiator grill, an optitronic dashboard, separate climate control and side curtain airbags. In 2005, there were fewer changes, and the most significant of them was the appearance of a 275-horsepower petrol version based on the 4.7 engine. The body itself at Toyota is difficult to find in a frankly rusty state: corrosion resistance is at a good level. Although there are still weak points - this is the windshield frame and the lower part of the fifth door. If the power units of the Land Cruiser are the standards of reliability, then the suspension is simply indestructible here, especially in the Land Cruiser 105. The worst thing that can disturb the owner is the wear of the stabilizer bushings after 40 thousand km. By about 150 thousand km, there is some likelihood of wear on the shock absorbers and front ball joints, which change as an assembly with levers. A little later, the power steering mechanism may start to junk, but it is perfectly repaired. It is better to avoid cars with air suspension: the cost of repair is much more expensive, and the resource is much less. But even if the hydraulic spheres fail, it remains possible to switch to conventional shock absorbers. With active driving, you need to be prepared for the rapid wear of the brake discs - the weight of the SUV is still serious.

The Land Cruiser 100 is the largest SUV in the Toyota range. It is also known under the names "500", Amazon and Lexus LS470 depending on the sales market and equipment. The world debut of the current (fifth) generation of "weaving" took place in 1998 in Chicago, European - in Geneva. Since then, more than one version of the car has been tested by "Motor". Now here is a 2001 VX model with a 4.2 liter turbodiesel engine and a manual transmission.

I can't call this huge car beautiful - because of the heaviness of its appearance (however, it can also be called solidity). There are not many cars that take up so much space on the road, except perhaps full-size "trucks" GM or, say, HUMMER ...

Getting in and out is no problem thanks to the large doorways (both front and rear) and the good wide step. The interior is well designed and well executed. Every little thing is thought out, everything you need is at hand. The car turned out to be practically in the simplest configuration, despite the VX index on the rear board (in some markets these letters mean the most expensive equipment option). No pseudo-wood in the cabin - everywhere honest plastic (none of the plastic parts during the test bothered us with their "sound"), no electronic gadgets, such as the one that drives off when the steering wheel is turned off and the seat servos are turned off. But this will not prevent a driver of any height and build from finding the optimal fit.

Landing is high, visibility has not caused any complaints, but confident reverse parking requires a habit - a feature of all large cars. If I had my way, the Land Cruiser would definitely have a system similar to Parktronic.

The instrument panel pleased me with large and easy-to-read speedometer and tachometer scales. They are complemented by indicators for fuel level, engine temperature, battery charge and oil pressure. To the right and left of the steering wheel there are switches for locking the interaxle and rear interwheel differentials. The selected mode is signaled by crosses that light up on the pictogram, which schematically depicts the transmission.

On the center console there is a radio tape recorder and a microclimate control unit. I was pleased with the stove: the test took place in a 15-degree frost, but the huge interior warmed up without problems.

The back seat will comfortably accommodate three people, and if they make room, then there is enough room for a fourth (the car is almost two meters wide). You don't have to be crowded, but throw a couple of hanging "chairs" in the luggage compartment, however, you won't go far on them. When folded, they are located along the sidewalls of the body and do not take up much space, and if necessary, they are dismantled. The rear row of seats can be folded down completely or in parts. The fifth door opens in the American way - one half up, the other down. The lower part can be used as an "extension" of the floor when transporting long loads ...

Land Cruiser is a serious car, and once again it is easy to see this by opening the hood. Everything that is possible is carefully sealed - all the wiring is laid in special tubes, you will not see bare terminals on the electrical connectors, the generator and starter are hidden in special casings. For a confident engine start in any weather, two powerful batteries are installed.

I start the engine. Its work can be guessed only by the arrow of the tachometer - noise and vibration practically do not penetrate into the cabin. The turbo diesel generates maximum torque (430 Nm) already at 1400 rpm. and keeps it up to 3200 rpm, which has a beneficial effect both when starting off and when overcoming obstacles. This characteristic, in my opinion, is ideal for an SUV. It allows you to move vnatyag almost at idle in difficult conditions and not be afraid that at the most inopportune moment the engine will stall.

We drove through deep snow, overcame snow plows built by a tractor, but we never managed to "plant" the car - despite the fact that there was road rubber on it. But we did not use the rich reserves of the transmission at all - differential locks and a low range ...

An attempt at a sharp start (and especially the beginning of acceleration) showed that a Land Cruiser with a turbodiesel and a manual transmission is not the best car for racing with a traffic light. At low engine speeds, the turbocharger does not work at full capacity, and when you release the gas to change from first to second, boost pressure is lost. However, if necessary, the Land Cruiser is quite willing to start on the second, and in a car with an automatic transmission, where you do not need to take your foot off the gas pedal, this problem will not arise at all.

Having accelerated, the car confidently keeps in the city traffic. Here, the wide torque shelf came in handy, even in fifth gear you can accelerate from 60 km / h. At first, there are problems with dimensions, especially with fast rebuilding, however, after a while you realize that on such a car, the "embroidery" tactics do not bring the necessary results. And it's useless (not to mention the fact that it is dangerous). You can simply move aggressively in the left lane, rolling on those in front. Only the most stubborn driver will not clear the road when he sees the colossus hanging over the rear bumper.

There is no need to be afraid of road surface defects thanks to the powerful energy-intensive suspension. Even on serious potholes, the car only sways, as if noting their presence. Despite the huge weight of the Land Cruiser, the brakes do their job successfully.

The massiveness of the car and the corresponding engine volume imply decent fuel consumption, and this was taken into account when choosing the volume of the tank - in principle, you can drive up to a thousand kilometers at one gas station ...

With long-term operation of any car, features may appear that cannot be felt during a test drive. Some remarks that have accumulated over a year of real use of the "hundred" were expressed by one of our readers on the pages of the magazine ("Motor" # 4, 1999), especially regarding the car's handling in extreme modes (for which, however, it is not intended) ... But even there it was noted that the only problem during this period was the failure of the headlight washer fuse ...

In general, the Land Cruiser 100 bears the heavy burden of its popularity with dignity.
