To begin with, preferably with the help of jacks a little hang out the front wheels although this is optional. After that, you should open the hood and find two hoses near the coolant tank. The hose, which is thinner and attached with a hose clamp, must be unscrewed. All this is done, of course, with the engine not running. In this case, it is necessary to prepare everything in advance and put things in order next to the car.
Draining old fluid in Opel
After removing the specified hose from the tube, you must unscrew the cap of the expansion tank... On this tube, from which the hose was removed, you should put one and a half or two-liter plastic bottle with the neck directly on the tube. We fix the bottle on the tube so that it does not fall off. This is usually accomplished by slipping the bottle between the hoses and wires. Additionally, it is not necessary to tie the bottle and fix the hose, since there is practically no head (pressure) in this place.
Now we start the car in neutral and wait until the bottle is completely filled with liquid from the tube. In about a minute, almost all liquid from the power steering will be drained... With the engine running, when the liquid flows down, the steering wheel should be rotated in both directions until it stops several times. This method will drain all the fluid from the power steering system. That's it, the engine can now be turned off.
Pouring new fluid into Opel
We remove the bottle with the spent power steering fluid, and put the hose in its place and fix it with a clamp. Fresh liquid should be poured into the expansion tank until it is full. After that, you need to start the engine again. We are preparing a new bottle of liquid, since the liquid poured into the tank will all go into the system. Gradually add liquid from the bottle to the tank on the basis that there should be about one liter of fluid in the system... Then, without closing the plug, we sit down again in the car.
With the engine running, we again turn the steering wheel all the way in both directions several times. This action to remove the remaining air from the inside of the system, which got into it when filling with new fluid. After the liquid is poured, the motor should still run for one or two minutes. Then we turn off the engine, plug back the power steering expansion tank, lower the car to the ground and we can check the reliability of the power steering.
The final stage
As mentioned at the beginning, the wheels do not need to be lifted, however, when all the liquid is drained, the steering wheel will turn quite hard. Therefore, so that the power steering pump does not work for a long time without fluid, it is better to raise the front wheels of the car a little.
The fluids used in the power steering can be divided according to several criteria:
- Color;
- Compound;
- Variety.
Color classification
It is wrong to be guided only by color gradation when choosing an oil, although this practice is widespread among car owners. It is also often indicated which color of liquid can be mixed, and which not.
Mixing is contraindicated in liquids in composition and not in color, and since now both mineral water and synthetics can be presented in any color, this information should be treated very carefully.
Red ATF gear oil is usually synthetic, the Dexron brand from General Motors is considered the reference, but there are products from other manufacturers such as Revenol, Motul, Shell, Zic, etc. 
The yellow oil produced and licensed by Daimler is used in Mercedes-Benz power steering systems. It can be synthetic and mineral.
Green oil. Most of them are multifunctional and universal fluids, in composition they can be both synthetic and mineral. They are used in hydraulic boosters, suspension and other systems that operate on liquids. You cannot mix with other colors, unless the manufacturer has declared full compatibility, for example, Comma PSF MVCHF is compatible with some types of Dexron. 
Liquid composition
According to the composition of the power steering fluid, it can be divided into mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic. The chemical composition determines the basic set of functions of the oil:
- Viscosity characteristics;
- Lubricating properties;
- Protection of parts against corrosion;
- Anti-foaming;
- Thermal and hydraulic properties.
Synthetics and mineral water cannot be mixed with each other, since the types of additives in them have cardinal differences.
Synthetics
These are high-tech fluids, in the production of which the most modern developments and additives are used. Petroleum fractions for synthetics are treated with hydrocracking. Polyesters, polyhydric alcohols and additives provide them with outstanding characteristics: a wide range of operating temperatures, a stable oil film, and a long service life. 
The main reason why you cannot fill a synthetic-based hydraulic fluid in a power steering intended for mineral power steering is its aggressive effect on rubber products, of which there are many in the power steering. Where synthetics are used, rubber has a completely different composition and is made on a silicone basis.
Semisynthetics
A mixture of synthetic and mineral oils, thanks to which the latter receive significant improvements in characteristics: reduced foaming, fluidity, heat dissipation. 
Semi-synthetic fluids include such well-known fluids as: Zic ATF Dex 3, Comma PSF MVCHF, Motul Dexron III and others.
Mineral water
Mineral oils contain petroleum fractions (85-98%), the remainder being additives that improve the performance of the hydraulic fluid.
They are used in hydraulic boosters, containing seals and parts based on ordinary rubber, since the mineral component is neutral, and is not harmful to rubber products, unlike synthetics. 
Mineral fluids for power steering are the most inexpensive, but they also have a short service life. Mobil ATF 320 Premium is considered a good mineral water; Dexron oils up to and including IID were also mineral.
Different types of oils
Dexron- a separate class of ATF fluids from General Motors, produced since 1968. Dexron is a trademark manufactured by GM itself and others under license.
ATF(Automatic Transmission Fluid) - oils for automatic transmissions, often used by Japanese automakers and power steering.
PSF(Power Steering Fluid) - literally translated as power steering fluid.
Multi HF- special, universal power steering fluids with approvals from most automotive manufacturers. For example, the CHF fluid produced by the German company Pentosin (pentosin) has received approvals from BMW, Ford, Chrysler, GM, Porsche, Saab and Volvo, Dodge, Chrysler.
Can I mix oils
Mixing is permissible, but the manufacturer's recommendations must be followed. Most often, the packaging indicates with which brands and classes of oils one or another fluid for power steering can be mixed.
Do not mix synthetics and mineral water, as well as different colors, unless it is directly indicated. If there is nowhere to go, and you have to pour what is at hand, replace this mixture with the recommended one as soon as possible.
Is it possible to pour engine oil into the power steering
Motor - definitely not, transmission - with reservations. Below, we'll take a closer look at why.
To understand whether it is possible to pour other oils into the power steering, for example, engine or transmission, you need to know what functions it performs. 
The fluid in the power steering must cope with the following tasks:
- Lubrication of all hydraulic booster assemblies;
- Protection against corrosion and wear of parts;
- Pressure transmission;
- Anti-foaming;
- Cooling the system.
The above characteristics are achieved by adding various additives, the presence and combination of which gives the oil for power steering the necessary qualities.
As you understand, the tasks of engine oil are somewhat different, therefore it is highly discouraged to pour it into the power steering.
With regard to transmission oil, everything is not so simple, the Japanese often use the same ATF for automatic transmissions and power steering. Europeans insist on using special PSF (Power Steering Fluid) oils.
What liquid to pour into the power steering
Based on this, the answer to the question "what kind of oil to pour into the power steering" is obvious - it is recommended by the manufacturer of your car. Often the information is indicated on the expansion tank or cap. If there is no technical documentation, call an authorized center and check.
In any case, steering experiments are not allowed. The serviceability of the power steering depends not only on your safety, but also on those around you.

How much oil is in power steering
As a rule, 1 liter of fluid is sufficient for replacement in a passenger car. For trucks this value can be up to 4 liters. The volume may slightly change up or down, but it is worth focusing on these figures.
How to check the level
To control the liquid level in the power steering, an expansion tank is provided. It is usually labeled with MIN and MAX values. Depending on the make of the car, the inscriptions may change, but the essence does not change - the oil level should be between these values.
How to top up
The refilling process itself is simple - you need to unscrew the cover of the power steering expansion tank and add enough fluid so that it is between the MIN and MAX marks.
The main problem when adding oil to the power steering is its choice. It is good if the replacement has not yet been made, and the system contains fluid from the manufacturer's plant. In this case, it is enough to check the technical documentation, take the recommended oil and top up to the required amount.
If you do not know what is in the system, we recommend that you replace it immediately, because in any case you will have to buy a canister of liquid for refilling.
A rare car today does without a power steering mechanism. This is either an electric booster (EUR) or a hydraulic booster (GUR). Both of these mechanisms have both their advantages and disadvantages, but their main function is the same: to reduce the effort required from the driver to turn the steering wheel.
Marginal notes: On luxury cars, the power steering also has one more function: when the speed of the car increases, it lowers the gear ratio of the steering system, thereby giving the car more maneuverability. Similar mechanisms are installed on a number of cars of the General Motors corporation. In Russia, an Opel Astra with such a hydraulic booster is a rarity. Power steering oil change Opel Astra N: preliminary information
The design of a traditional power steering is quite simple. This mechanism consists of the following components:
- a cylinder along which, depending on the steering wheel rotation, the working fluid (oil) moves into one or another cavity;
- containers (tank) with working fluid;
- distributor with spool;
- electric pump of the hydraulic booster, forcing the working fluid to fill one or another cavity of the cylinder;
- connecting hoses and oil seals.
The hydraulic power steering is a closed system. When the driver turns the steering wheel in one direction or another, the pump turns on, distilling the working fluid from the reservoir to the cylinder. Passing through the spool valve, the oil fills the right or left cylinder cavity and presses on the piston with the rod, which moves the steering rack. After the steering wheel returns to its original position at the end of the turn, the fluid from the cylinder flows back to the tank through the drain lines.
Opel Astra N: replacing power steering fluid, taking into account its properties
Important! Power steering oil, while circulating along the working circuit of the system, does not come into contact with any other liquids and contaminated parts, or with air. Therefore, in an ideal system, its properties should not change even with intensive and prolonged use of the car. But, unfortunately, the existence of ideal systems is possible only in theory. In practice, this liquid can leak through cracked oil seals or worn out hoses, while coming into contact with air and getting dirty. Accordingly, its properties deteriorate.
Power steering oil can be mineral or synthetic. But it is believed that it is better to use a mineral-based liquid. The fact is that the power steering contains many rubber and plastic components, and synthetic oils, many of which contain rubber fibers, can corrode even especially strong and wear-resistant compounds over time. Mineral, on the other hand, protects the metal components of this mechanism from corrosion, and does not destroy rubber seals and plastic hoses.
Power steering oil must have the following properties:
- a certain viscosity, which would allow it to move freely along the working circuit and at the same time protect its metal components from corrosion (the viscosity of power steering oil is much lower than that of engine oil;
- resistance to compression - otherwise the amplifier would not be able to do its job efficiently);
- resistance to temperature extremes, so that the properties of this product remain unchanged not only regardless of the season, but also on the engine temperature.
Unfortunately, over time, there may be a moment when it will need to be replaced, even if the fluid working circuit is not damaged and there were no leaks. This happens because the properties of the product deteriorate - first of all, this concerns its viscosity.
Opel Astra H: replacing power steering fluid in car services
If the criterion for changing engine oil is the mileage of the car, then the quality of the amplifier fluid does not depend on the number of kilometers traveled by the car. The frequency of changing the oil for the Opel Astra H power steering is determined exclusively by time. It is believed - automakers and car service specialists agree with this statement - that this should be done at least once a year. For example, during the spring maintenance process when preparing the car for the summer season.
Important! Power steering oil must be replaced in the event of a leak. In this case, after eliminating the cause of leakage, it is better to pour the product completely than to simply top up to the required level. It will also be necessary to replace the fluid if you notice that it has changed color - this indicates that its resource is exhausted.
There are three main types of fluids for filling the power steering reservoir. They all differ in color:
- Red. It is the most expensive and is used mainly in power steering of cars with automatic transmission and can be either mineral or synthetic. Theoretically, it can be mixed with a yellow liquid (although it is better to do this only if absolutely necessary), but under no circumstances with a green one.
- Green fluid is used only for cars with a manual transmission. This synthetic oil with a fairly large amount of additives is not recommended to be mixed with any other.
- Power steering universal fluid is yellow. It can be used in hydraulic boosters of almost any car, regardless of the design of their gearbox.
When choosing a power steering oil for Opel Astra N, you can not even look at its manufacturer and not study its technical characteristics in detail - you just need to decide what color fluid is best suited for your car. Considering that most of these vehicles are equipped with an automatic transmission, this will be either a red or yellow product. Its quality can only be guaranteed by the decency of the seller - a specialized auto parts store or a service station.
Important! Before pouring new oil into the power steering tank, you need to allow the old one to drain as completely as possible. And even better - also flush the entire working circuit of the system with the help of special means. Indeed, such a procedure can only be carried out with high quality in a car service.
