Test drives Audi A4 allroad quattro

Test drive December 01, 2017 Unnoticed premiere

Updated Audi The A4 Allroad Quattro was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show back in 2016. The model has not changed that much, and was it really worth changing something that was already good? After all, as you know, the best is the enemy of the good. In the sense that deliberate updates can, to put it mildly, ruin a car like porridge - with an excessive amount of oil. However, there are changes, and the main ones are in the technical part

The whole photo shoot

The sharpest steering wheel makes barely more than 2.5 turns from lock to lock. It is constantly “filled” with force, which can be further increased using the car settings menu called AUDI DRIVE SELECT. At your service is a tablet-type 8-inch central display with a magnificent picture that does not fade in the sun and does not dazzle in the dark. Protruding vertically from the dashboard, it does not play in the slightest. And, although its surface is not touch-sensitive, operating functions is extremely convenient thanks to the joystick and MMI system buttons. Only now, after two BMWs, out of habit, I constantly try to fumble with my hand for this joystick behind the selector, but it is in front. Otherwise, the logic of the two “irreconcilable” adversary systems is very similar; I do not find decisive advantages in either one or the other.

But the AUDI DRIVE SELECT function has advantages, but over its “relative” system, which is equipped with Skodas. How is it that with the latter, despite the excellent graphics of the multimedia display, changing the settings changes almost nothing in the behavior of the car? Well, yes, when choosing the ECO position in response to adding “gas”, at the first moment you will feel a failure and only then acceleration, and when sport mode this failure will not happen. But in absolute numbers there is almost no change! The differences in acceleration time are fractions of a second, which only special devices can detect, but the driver practically cannot.

And here is the Audi, which, when choosing a sport setting, simply begins to disappear from under your feet. And so we constantly move with it on the edge of the permitted speeds, often overstepping it, and then the electronics additionally speed up the motor. The “weakest” mode loses to the most reckless in the acceleration time from 80 to 120 km/h by at least two seconds, and on average, the gasoline turbo version produces 252 hp. With. (for Russia - 249 hp) overcomes this interval in 6 seconds - very quickly! The rate of acceleration of the car from zero to 100 km/h is approximately the same - 6.1 s.

This engine is the first in terms of power among the gasoline engines available on this model. The second two-liter engine develops 190 hp. s., also not without the help of turbocharging. The A4 Allroad also has five turbodiesels, three of which are also two-liter, with a capacity of 150, 163 and 190 hp. s, and two are three-liter (218 and 272 hp). In terms of torque, the test gasoline car outperforms only the least “strong” diesel engine (370 Nm versus 320), the other heavy fuel versions have 400 Newton-meter torque, and the “main” one has as much as 600 Nm.

Five diesel engines against two gasoline engines... it seems that the VAG concern has recovered from the scandal called “dieselgate” and is ready to further develop and improve heavy fuel engines. But on the test we have the petrol turbo version of the A4 Allroad, and its thrust, stretched in the range from 1600 to 4500 Nm, is perhaps not only as good as, but even superior to, the capabilities of another diesel engine. In practice, however, I wouldn’t really count on the lower “edge” of this range, but starting from 2000-2200 Nm, you are guaranteed excellent pickup. Which is ready to continue up to 4500-4800 rpm if you need it.

The car settings menu, including AUDI DRIVE SELECT, is displayed on an 8-inch central tablet-style display with an excellent picture that does not fade in the sun and does not dazzle in the dark. Protruding vertically from the dashboard, it does not play in the slightest. And, although its surface is not touch-sensitive, operating functions is extremely convenient thanks to the joystick and MMI system buttons.

What about the seven-speed automatic? Only good. You are unlikely to need its manual functions, although they exist, and you can implement them both with the help of small, barely noticeable steering wheel paddles when looking into the cabin, and with the help of the DSG selector itself, which is a powerful multifunctional device. In particular, the P (Parking) button is displayed on it. You can change gears using the selector like a rocker. Actually, the same thing happens when driving modes change. But it’s most convenient to place your right elbow on the box armrest while moving, and your hand on the selector, wide as a shelf. These two surfaces are on the same level, which is extremely convenient in long journey. And although the controls are located almost as ergonomically in other models, on the Audi it is especially convenient thanks to the large area of the upper part of the DSG selector.

Without dirt and “diagonal”

So what happens to our all-wheel drive station wagon off road? Is it worth leaving the asphalt on it, and if so, how far? By and large, you can drive away from the hard surface to any distance, as long as it is not deep, in every sense of the word. The bottom of the A4 Allroad is flat, without noticeably protruding elements, but it is not raised high above the ground, only 175 mm. This is good clearance for a car, but, of course, not for an SUV.

And the overhangs of this car are quite long: the front is 894 mm, the rear is 1038 mm. But these values were obtained by measurements from the centers of the front and rear wheels. 520 mm at the front and 640 mm at the rear “hang” directly above the road (my measurements). In both cases it is a decent length. This means that steep terrain bends must be treated with reverence. It’s not difficult to “resist.” Silver lining on the lower parts of the front and rear bumpers have, first of all, a decorative function. Protective properties they are small.

In addition, the driver does not have the opportunity to influence in any way all-wheel drive transmission. It is said to live its own life, redirecting some of the torque to the rear axle at will. But this discretion changes, for a minute, every 10 milliseconds, so traffic conditions are constantly monitored. And now, on the new A4 Allroad Quattro (and there are no non-Quattro off-road station wagons from Audi), two devices instead of one are responsible for adjusting to changing conditions. Instead of self-locking center differential Torsen's all-wheel drive system uses a multi-disc Haldex coupling with several pairs of friction discs operating in an oil “bath”. When you feel the front wheels slipping, the electronics gives a command to lock the clutches, and the torque begins to be transmitted to the rear wheels. It seems to be a well-known scheme, but now it has received a different execution. So, the clutch “moved” from the rear cross-axle differential housing to the “output” of the gearbox, and another clutch, a cam clutch, took its former place. During normal driving, with front-wheel drive, it is open (like the front Haldex clutch) under the action of a compact electric motor, and the rear wheels rotate freely. If necessary, transfer traction to the wheels rear axle the electric motor is switched off, a set of springs closes the second clutch, and the right one is set in motion rear wheel. This transmission is called quattro ultra.

According to the manufacturer, all-wheel drive is activated by analyzing the readings of a number of sensors, including temperature sensors, so that in cold and hot weather the system is more active and can engage the rear wheels even a little earlier than the need arises. So to speak, in advance and in order to avoid... What does this mean for the driver, what does he feel? Except highest stability when driving on primers - in general, nothing. The company brochure contains colorful pictures illustrating the mutual operation of the two clutches, but the juicy multimedia screen in the car does not show the much-desired “cartoon”. And when would you look at it? You can’t tear yourself away from the road, and it’s advisable to leave large potholes aside. Suspension off-road station wagon tough, short-stroke, although breakdowns happen rarely, impacts on uneven surfaces sound unpleasant. But how strictly does the car stay on course! Not the slightest attempt to “play” to the side with the rear axle! Or rather, she, of course, “plays,” but almost imperceptibly, solely for course correction. Is it possible to fool the electronics and break the rear axle? Somehow I'm not sure about this. There is, of course, the ability to disable the stabilization system...

But I turn it off elsewhere. I'm trying to overcome the downs and ups pretty much steep slope river bank. The A4 Allroad, by the way, has an electronic assist when driving downhill, and here it works very clearly. We slide down to the sound of the mechanism almost to the water itself. Will you be able to climb back? It's good that there is room for a little overclocking just in case. Just don't jump at the edge of the slope. We confidently drive it to the middle, and then it occurs to me to stop to see if the car will hold on. Yes, it holds on and starts off very confidently, without rolling back... but road tires don’t have enough traction on sand, and slippage begins, to which the ESC instantly reacts. I turn off the traction control and climb up. I repeat the exercise without stopping on the slope - at a steady pace of ascent, even without acceleration, there is no need to turn off the safety electronics.

A little to the side of this descent to the water there is another one, with a longitudinal ditch, apparently washed with spring water. The ground is solid, but the bends are significant. I descend as carefully as possible so as not to hit the front bumper (remember the size of the overhangs) - and the right rear wheel, driven when all-wheel drive is engaged, rises into the air. That's it, no overpass is required to inspect the car from below, and if desired, even feel the powerful aluminum levers. Their appearance inspires confidence in a long service life.

It is believed that when hanging diagonally, the quattro ultra system will be powerless. Electronic locks front and rear differentials(EDL), supposedly, are not able to brake the wheels rotating in the air powerfully enough to transfer part of the torque to those that have traction with the soil. My case was not the most illustrative in this regard. The ditch went downhill, the car inevitably leaned forward, so the two front wheels were on the ground. Well, next time we'll give him a tougher test.

Just like that, quietly and imperceptibly, without fanfare or fuss, he practically rolled into our lives. perfect car- with excellent handling on asphalt, decent behavior outside of it and high capacity. Of course, the starting price of the petrol two-liter 250-horsepower version of 2.7 million rubles can hardly be called “divine”, but among the competitors are station wagons off-road- The Audi A4 Allroad Quattro (now, let’s add, quattro ultra) is not particularly expensive. And it doesn’t lack in equipment, although test version the camera was suddenly missing rear view and a USB port for listening to audio recordings. Well, this model doesn’t indulge in interior space either. However, the “close” fit in in this case enhances the unity of the driver with the car, puts him in a special, sporty mood. Coupled with the strong “two-liter juice” under the hood, this can get a little intoxicating... or maybe not a little.

The new Audi A4 Allroad Quatro model compared to the previous version, which debuted in 2009, has increased in size, become more stylish, economical and with more generous basic content. The only argument that is not in favor of the new car is its price, which seems to me to be somewhat overpriced.
