Reliable v6. The most reliable engines. Diesel millionaire OM602 from Mercedes-Benz

Almost all modern gasoline engines have a very complex design, thanks to which the engineers who worked on them manage to achieve excellent environmental and power performance. But if many power units despite this without special problems withstand a run of 200-250 thousand kilometers, then individual copies begin to present unpleasant surprises much earlier. So what modern gasoline engines deserve to be called the worst in terms of reliability today?

Engines 2.0 JTS and 2.2 JTS Alfa Romeo

Without a doubt, this list includes 2.0 JTS and 2.2 JTS engines installed on Alfa Romeo cars. These power units can be found under the hood of the 156, 159, GT and Brera models. Both engines have one common problem- carbon deposits on the intake valves. In the case of a power unit of a smaller volume, it can even come to damage to the valves. And 2.2 JTS is characterized by accelerated wear camshafts. In addition, both power units are prone to excessive oil consumption. Periodic failures in the operation of control electronics are not uncommon.

Toyota ZZ series (1.4 - 1.8 liters)

Excessive consumption of oil affects and ZZ series engines (1.4 - 1.8 liters) from Toyota, which were born in 2000 and were installed, for example, on the Corolla Verso and Avensis models. Due to a design miscalculation, not all engine parts of the ZZ family receive required amount lubrication, which often ends up very rapid wear piston rings. Fortunately, the Japanese still tried to solve this problem and used an additional oil channel in the modified engines.

Petrol engine 1.6 THP Peugeot and Citroen

It didn't turn out too well and petrol engine 1.6 THP, which the French from Peugeot companies and Citroen designed in collaboration with specialists from German BMW. Initially, this power unit, but it was installed on the BMW of the first series, Mini Cooper S and almost everything modern models concern PSA, has earned a lot of flattering reviews. However, then it became clear that this engine is prone to premature wear camshaft bearings, which can also be accelerated even more when driving for a long time with a lower level engine oil. Add here the malfunctions of the electronics and the valve timing system. But that's not all. Quite often, damage to the turbocharger rotor occurs in 1.6 THP engines. And the worst thing is that all this happens at a very low mileage. Against this background, the problems with the stretching chain of the timing mechanism no longer seem so significant.

Engines of the TSI family (1.2 and 1.4 liters) Volkswagen

The chain is also stretched in the engines of the TSI family (1.2 and 1.4 liters) from Volkswagen. And if you do not rush to replace it, then it is quite possible to get to the overhaul of the engine. In addition, problems with the turbine are often observed in TSI engines due to a defective valve. And on some cars, cases of piston burnout were recorded at all. Volkswagen, however, responded very quickly to the problems that arose and already in 2012 introduced a new version of the motor (EA211 series). In it to replace chain drive The timing belt came with a much less problematic belt.

Three-cylinder gasoline engine 1.0 R3 Opel

Well, the most unfortunate this moment can be recognized three-cylinder petrol engine 1.0 R3 from Opel, which was installed on the Opel Corsa C and Agila models. Not only is this power unit notable for its rather rough operation and low power, it is also one of the worst in terms of reliability. Failed ignition coils and an engine control unit, oil and coolant leaks are far from all that owners of cars with this power unit under the hood have to deal with. For some of them, it all ended with twisted liners and a broken timing chain. A certain minus of the 1.0 R engine can also be called the fact that it was installed exclusively on available small cars. As a result, now the cost of overhauling such a power unit may well exceed the cost of the car itself. There is something to think about!

Hello everybody! The most reliable engines Japanese cars Toyota, which do not break, let's talk about them. An engine that can travel up to a million kilometers or more. And this is not a myth, this is a reality proven by more than one thousand eyewitnesses.

Engines produced by Toyota are good, well thought out and easy to repair. They differ slightly from the German ones only in that they may have fewer lotions, such as balancing shafts, gas phase change systems, and others.

The Japanese are much better organized engine compartment, unlike the Germans, where it is much more difficult to get to fix a trifling malfunction. For example, on a Mercedes OM642 engine and the like, in order to replace the heat exchanger gasket, you need to disassemble the entire collapse of the cylinders. The approximate cost will be 30-35 thousand rubles.

Therefore, Toyota cars are very fond of servicemen, they are easy to maintain and repair.

And so, the engines are centenarians.

Toyota D4-D engine

I want to draw your attention to the first generation engines. Diesel. It can be safely attributed to the millionaires, because in reality, cars with such an engine, with minor malfunctions, took care of 700-800 thousand kilometers or more.

The oldest was produced until 2008. It had a volume of 2 liters, developed a power of 116 hp, had the usual classic layout. Cast iron block, eight-valve timing, aluminum block head, conventional timing belt drive.

Such motors were designated by the index "CD". The owners of such motors had practically no complaints about the work, if they happened, it was only about the work of the injectors, which were easy to restore. There were also problems associated with systems related to the protection of the environment, namely particulate filters and EGR valves.

Well, it all depends on the quality of the fuel and have a mediocre relationship to the design. For the same reason, after 500 thousand km. out of order TNVD.

Toyota 3S-FE engine

This engine is considered by many to be one of the most tenacious. Just not killable. It appeared in the late 80s and was installed on almost all Toyota cars.

Atmospheric, four-cylinder, 16-valve, engine power varied from 128 to 140 hp. Camry, Carina, Avensis, Rav4 and others, this is an incomplete list of cars on which this engine was installed.

This motor was produced from 1986 to 2000. There was also a more powerful version of this 3S-GTE engine, it was already turbocharged and, having acquired all the positive design qualities from the 3S-FE, was also a fairly reliable version of this unique engine.

This motor was installed on Camry, Vista, Carina, CarinaED, Chaser, Mark II, Cresta.

So our hero endured all the hardships of poor service, working in unbearable conditions, he never failed, he was very convenient and easy to repair. It could be disassembled and assembled in the garage, field conditions, so to speak, to fix the problem, of course, with skill and knowledge.

With good service, such a motor went out quietly 600 thousand, then with minor repairs it was possible to squeeze a million out of it.

Toyota 1JZ-GE and 2JZ-GE engine

The 1JZ-GE engine was 2.5 liter, the 2JZ-GE was 3.0 liter. Both engines are in-line, 6-cylinder, atmospheric (no turbine).

The longevity of these engines is amazing. For them to skate a million km. no major repairs, no problems at all!!! Unless, of course, you intentionally kill him.

And if after the appropriate repair, then it still runs at least 500 thousand kilometers. He needs a statue somewhere! Honor and praise to the Japanese engineers who developed such engines.

Mechanics all over the world, without exception, respect this engine, even calling it an engine for a tank. Because their reliability and margin of safety is such that a 3.0 liter 2JZ-GE, with appropriate tuning, installation of turbines and fine-tuning it to the maximum forcing, can be squeezed out of it up to 500 hp. For comparison, a Lexus IS-300 with this engine in 3.0 is 214 hp.

There are also from the same series, but they are quite rare, these are 3JZ-GE and 4JZ-GE. Eight and ten cylinder engines.

Everything that was said good above applies to these engines, this exotic layout is simply endlessly surprising. Such motors still serve somewhere and certainly please their owners.
To summarize all these motors, which we put in the first place. Very strong, let's say, fittings, the basis of this engine. And simple and reliable electronics. They have practically no disadvantages! Nothing breaks!

There is no oil starvation, and in this regard, the resource is very large. There are no new confusing technologies, just a good layout and good metal in the places where it should be good.

The only problem, high flow fuel and the absence of non-original spare parts. Only original.

They put such motors on Toyotas and Lexuses of various modifications.

Production: since 1993 - 1.2 liters, since 2003 - 1.4 liters.

Application: Fiat Punto/Grande Punto/Punto Evo, Fiat 500, Fiat Panda, Fiat Idea, Fiat Palio, Ford Ka (2nd generation), Fiat Linea, Lancia Musa, Lancia Y.

Fiat engines of the FIRE series (Fully Integrated Robotised Engine - completely assembled by robots engine) for over 30 years. The range of power units covers a wide range of engines with a working volume from 769 cm3 to 1368 cm3, and 8-valve versions were later supplemented with 16-valve ones. Two 8-valve units without hydraulic pushers are worthy of attention.

In general, all versions of engines with an 8-valve head, regardless of the displacement, turned out to be very durable. The simple design showed high wear resistance even in small displacement engines (eg 1.1). Outdated 8-valve versions after a timing belt break will not require a major overhaul, which is inevitable for more modern modifications that have a higher compression ratio and comply with Euro-5 standards.

FIRE engines have always been characterized by "plasticity" of character. Incredibly, two absolutely identical motors after running in behaved completely differently. So with calm drivers, he behaved lazily, and with temperamental drivers, he behaved more briskly.

Regular maintenance involves changing the timing belt, spark plugs and a reasonable oil change interval (in Europe it is a maximum of 15,000 km). These engines are absolutely reliable - they can only occasionally be disturbed by minor oil leaks.

Ford 1.38VDuratecRocam"

Production: 2001-2008

Application: Ford Ka (1st generation), Ford Fiesta VI.

The engine is similar in design and parameters to the older 1.3 OHV. It has a cast iron block, timing chain and hydraulic tappets. The power unit is rather lazy, but absolutely reliable. It has good traction low revs and requires minimal operating costs. The motor was assembled in Brazil and South Africa (South Africa). The abbreviation Rocam stands for Shaft with Roller Bearings.

Along with the ancient OHC "Pinto" unit (used, for example, in the Ford Sierra), this is one of the most reliable engines that has ever been under the hood of a Ford. The larger 1.6L Rocams are much rarer. They were used mainly in the "charged" Ford SportKa and Ford StreetKa.

Honda 2.2i-DTEC

Production: 2008-2015.

Application: 8th generation Honda Accord, 3rd generation Honda CR-V, Honda Civic- 9th generation.

In fact, 98% of Honda's gasoline units could be listed here, and no one would object. But much more interesting is the fact that the Japanese diesel engine turned out to be very reliable. And this despite the fact that its design uses all the most vulnerable elements of modern diesel engines, which the best of competitors cannot cope with.

Using a single-row timing chain is completely counterproductive, not to mention a thermally unstable aluminum block with thin dry steel cylinder inserts (complicating heat dissipation) - any connoisseur will tell you BMW diesel N47.

In 2.2 i-DTEC, such a set works properly for a long time. Even the piezoelectric injectors, the turbocharger (has water-cooled bearings) and the electrically controlled EGR valve do not cause problems. The normally carbonized swirl flaps in the intake manifold have been replaced bypass valve at the entrance to the bifurcated intake duct, and the EGR was "connected" behind it.

The only known drawback is the failure of the differential pressure sensor of the DPF filter.

Mercedes M266 (1.5/1.7/2.0)

Production: 2004-2012.

Application: mercedes a-class(W/C 169), Mercedes B-Class (T 245).

Strong and reliable diesel engines from OM601 to OM606 are known from the legendary W124. But they are long out of date. However, among the newer units you can find a hardy motor. This is M266. The 4-cylinder petrol engine is an evolution of the previous M166, known from first A-Class and Vaneo.

The engine received a specific design, as it had to be placed at a large slope in a cramped engine compartment. The engineers relied on simplicity: only one timing chain and 8-valve gas distribution mechanism.

Mechanical very reliable. Injector failures are very rare (which is somewhat surprising for an indirect injection gasoline engine). But in most cases, the defect manifested itself in warranty period service.

All three versions of the motor are very hardy. The presence of turbocharging for modifications of the A200 Turbo theoretically increases the likelihood of malfunctions, but in reality nothing of the kind happens. The disadvantages include slightly increased fuel consumption, but this merit is not enough good aerodynamics of the body.

Mitsubishi 1.3/1.5/1.6MIVEC (series 4A9)

Production: since 2004.

Application: Mitsubishi Colt, Mitsubishi Lancer,Mitsubishi ASX, Smart ForFour, Citroën C4 Aircross.

Almost all gasoline Mitsubishi engines very reliable, so it is not easy to choose the most-most difficult. One of the most common is the 4-cylinder unit of the 4A9 series. It was created in a Mitsubishi/Daimler-Chrysler collaboration and is one of the most reliable engines on the market today.

4A9 is made entirely of aluminum, has a 16-valve DOHC gas distribution system, a variable valve timing system intake valves with electronic control MIVEC (some versions of the engine with a working volume of 1.3 liters are deprived of it). Although the engine is over 10 years old, no problems are known. Cars with such engines come to the service only for maintenance - replacement, oil, filters and candles.

4A9 is only atmospheric. Turbocharged Colt CZT/Ralliart models use a completely different Mitsubishi "Orion" engine. Citroen C4 Aircross inherited the engine from its technical Mitsubishi twin ASX 1.6 MIVEC, but it is marketed under the simple name 1.6 i, and in some markets even under the completely amazing 1.6 VTi.

PSA 1.4HDi 8V(DV4)

Production: since 2001.

Application: Citroen C1, C2 Citroen, Citroen C3, Citroen Nemo, Peugeot 107, Peugeot 1007, Peugeot 206, Peugeot 207, Peugeot Bipper, Toyota Aygo, Ford Fiesta, Ford Fusion, Mazda 2.

The small 1.4 HDi can be seen as the successor to the legendary XUD7/XUD9. Even despite the fact that "on paper" the 1.4 HDi was created in collaboration with Ford (as was the larger 1.6 HDi). In fact, this is a completely French design, which turned out to be very successful.

Like Honda, the French were able to create a durable aluminum block with dry inserts. The timing belt is capable of going 240,000 km or 10 years. A simple turbocharger will last forever. The common rail injection system from Siemens has proven itself right from the start. Mazda, Ford and some PSA models have recently mentioned the Bosch injection system.

Initiates know that there is also a 16-valve version with a return of 90 hp. for more powerful options - Citroen C3 1.4 HDi and Suzuki Liana 1.4 DDiS. With its leaky 16-valve head, variable geometry turbocharger and Delphi injection system, this engine will never match the simple 8-valve version in terms of reliability.

Subaru 3.0 / 3.6R6 (EZ30 /EZ36)

Production: since 2000.

Application: Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Subaru Tribeca.

Of all the illustrious Subaru boxers, the most reliable are the naturally aspirated six-cylinder EZ series, known from the Outback, Legacy 3.0R and the Tribeca crossover. The first versions of the 3-liter Outback H6 (219 hp until 2002) still had a mechanical throttle control and an aluminum intake manifold. Later modifications (245 hp), despite more sophisticated technologies (among others, a system for regulating the lift height and phases of the intake valves, and in 3.6 also the exhaust ones), did not become more “vulnerable”.

The engine has so-called wet cylinder liners and a durable timing chain. The only real downside is the relatively high level fuel consumption (especially in the Legacy 3.0 Spec B, equipped with a sports manual with a short-stroke gear selector) and minor maintenance difficulties (for example, to change spark plugs due to poor accessibility to "horizontal" cylinders).

Suzuki 1.3/1.5/1.6DOHCM"

Production: since 2000.

Application: Suzuki Jimny, Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Ignis, Suzuki SX4, Suzuki Liana, Suzuki Grand Vitara (1.6), Fiat Sedici (1.6), Subaru Justy III.

M series engines include 1.3, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.8 small capacity motors. The latter is exclusively for the Australian market. On the European continent, the power unit is found in almost all small and medium Suzuki models that appeared at the turn of our millennium, and in the Fiat Sedici 1.6, which is a copy of the Suzuki SX4. The mechanical part of the engine is very reliable and durable. Even the phase change system is not satisfactory VVT valve timing used by most engine modifications. It is not only in the 1.3-liter version, designed for Ignis and Jimny until 2005, and the old 1.5 modifications for the SX4.

The timing chain drive is reliable. Among the minor flaws, small oil leaks through the stuffing box can be noted. crankshaft. More serious malfunctions are almost never encountered.

Toyota 1.51NZ-FXE Hybrid

Production: since 1997.

Application: Toyota Prius I, Toyota Prius II, Toyota Yaris III Hybrid.

As with Honda, this review almost all Toyota engines could get in, but let's focus on the hybrid, which is still perceived by most motorists with skepticism. And this despite the fact that this power unit has unprecedented reliability. Simple gasoline engine high compression, Atkinson cycle, synchronous motor with permanent magnet and nothing more.

There are no gearboxes in the classical sense, and therefore there are no problems with this device. Instead, a planetary gearbox with two inputs and one output is used. gear ratio varies depending on the difference in the speeds of rotation of both engines.

The most frightening thing is the expensive battery. But so far none of the owners have changed it. European competitors can not oppose anything to the phenomenal Japanese reliability.

Volkswagen 1.9SDI /TDI

Production: 1991-2006 (in some markets until 2010).

Application: Audi 80 B4, Audi A4 (1st generation), Audi A3 (1st generation), Audi 100/A6 (C4), Audi A6 (C5), Seat Alhambra, Seat Ibiza, Seat Cordoba, Seat Inca, Seat Leon, Seat Toledo, VW Caddy, VW Polo, VW Golf, VW Vento, VW Bora, VW Passat, VW Sharan, VW Transporter, Ford Galaxy(1st generation), Škoda Fabia and Škoda Octavia (1st generation).

Undoubtedly, this is one of the most famous, but perhaps the most controversial engine on our list. The SDI/TDI engines are based on the old 1.9 D/TD. They received direct injection, the thermal loads on the block head were reduced and a Bosch rotary pump was installed, however, it is sensitive to fuel quality.

The reliability and durability, especially of the simple naturally aspirated 1.9 SDI versions, deserves respect. The engine is able to cover more than one million kilometers without major investments. Commonly Mentioned Sensor Issues mass flow air is not taken into account.

Paradoxically, the most reliable turbocharged variant is only the 90 PS TDI with a maximum torque of 202 Nm (code designation 1Z or AHU). This turbodiesel appeared in the early nineties and was used in Audi, Golf III, Passat B4, Seat until 1996-1997.

Among the Skoda Octavia, the CMA is considered the best TDI. Its small, fixed-geometry turbocharger exhibits much greater survivability than the supercharger of a 90-horsepower ALH with variable geometry. The latter was prone to blade sticking, just like the 110 hp version.

The only thing weakness SDI / TDI, especially in the early years of production - crankshaft damper pulley.

Long gone are the days when diesel fuel was used only on ships and in heavy trucks. Now this type of fuel has become an integral attribute of a modern car. And the current units have nothing to do with the engines produced in the past, which were slow, low power, bad smell diesel fuel and black cinder.

Modern diesel engines are very different from their ancestors.

The first appeared in the pre-war period. They were too noisy, demanding on quality fuel and needed frequent maintenance which was costly. Modern motors operating on such fuel are quite economical and have high power. They are able to make life easier for their owner and bring him a lot of advantages.

Engine differences

Consider how the units operating on different fuels differ from each other.

Motors are aggregates internal combustion. Compressed in cylinders fuel-air mixture ignited with a spark. Such engines are divided as follows:

  • injection - gasoline is supplied to a common pipeline using one or more injectors;
  • carburetor - the process of mixing air and fuel begins, and ends in the intake manifold;
  • injection of fuel directly into the combustion chamber allows the engine to work even on lean mixtures and optimizes the combustion process.

These are internal combustion units equipped with piston system. The principle of operation of such a motor is somewhat different. The ignition of the atomized fuel occurs after its contact with heated air. Makes diesel units more economical, unlike their gasoline counterparts, a high degree of fuel compression. Diesel engines do not have a throttle valve, which does not reduce fuel consumption.

Advantages of diesel engines

The first diesel engines for passenger cars were simply smaller copies of engines that were installed on heavy vehicles. Thanks to innovative engineering solutions modern diesel engines received unique characteristics and became quieter and more powerful. Cars diesel cars now popular and in demand. The following are their main advantages:

  • The efficiency of a diesel engine is higher than that of its gasoline-powered counterpart. It converts 36% of the fuel energy into useful energy, and only 26% for a gasoline unit;
  • the likelihood of fire is significantly lower than that of gasoline options;
  • the cost of fuel is lower than the price of gasoline;
  • efficiency - fuel consumption is 25% lower than gasoline;
  • low toxicity exhaust gases does not pollute the environment;
  • lack of an ignition system;
  • the endurance of a diesel engine, and, accordingly, its long work, in contrast to gasoline units;
  • high power acceleration speed due to the presence of a turbocharger;
  • fuel acts as an oil, lubricating the main parts of the engine;
  • water resistance, unpretentiousness and universal cross-country ability in off-road conditions;
  • popularity.

Of course, it cannot be said that the diesel engine is so perfect and does not have any shortcomings. Among the shortcomings can be noted:

  • diesel fuel has a lower freezing point than gasoline;
  • enough noisy work unit idling;
  • high cost of spare parts;
  • a high power starter is required;
  • engine sensitivity to low-quality and dirty fuel;
  • before starting the engine, you have to wait until the combustion chamber warms up;
  • the diesel unit is not designed to operate at high speeds;
  • v winter period you can not use "summer" diesel fuel;
  • in severe frosts, due to insufficient compression, starting the engine will be quite problematic.

best diesel car engine

It has already been proven that diesel engines are more reliable, durable and economical. All the best diesel engines can be divided into the following areas:

  1. American - Chrysler and Ford. These manufacturers are constantly working to reduce fuel consumption and rely on the power and performance of their units.
  2. German - Mercedes and BMW. High technological performance of engines and excellent quality of products. Distinctive features are excellent dynamic characteristics and maximum reliability.
  3. Asian - Toyota and Hyundai. The products of these brands are distinguished by reliability, high dynamic performance and productivity.

We will figure out which of the diesel engines is the best.

The OM602 diesel engine from Mercedes is a real legend. It has already been discontinued, but cars on diesel fuel, equipped with such a motor, will drive on the roads of the world for a long time to come. This is due to the fact that the service life of this unit is estimated at a million kilometers. If you properly take care of the fuel system of the vehicle, then the engine will certainly be able to drive up to two million kilometers.

The N57 engine from BMW has a volume of 3 liters and 6 cylinders. Such indicators make this unit a champion in its niche. It is installed on sedans of the 5th and 7th series and full-size crossovers. For all its power, the engine is quite economical. Permanent care per fuel system and the purchase of exceptionally high-quality fuel will allow you to drive up to 200-250 thousand km without problems.

Chrysler's Cummins turbodiesel has 275 horsepower. It is aggressive and at the same time very economical. The heads of this engine are cast from a new alloy, which allows us to consider it an environmentally friendly unit.

The Asian U2 14 is the best fit for Russian motorists. It has a simpler design, reliable and unpretentious. It gives pretty decent performance and at the same time is resistant to low-quality fuels and lubricants.

The best diesel cars of 2015

  • Family Skoda car Octavia has been unrivaled since 1996. It is equipped with a 1.9 liter engine.

  • Ford Focus 3 is ideally suited for city driving. There are options that, on the contrary, are ideal for the track. The choice is up to the consumer.

  • Ford Fiesta is a fairly compact car that has a lot of modifications. It can be equipped with a 1.4 or 1.6 liter diesel engine. Great for both city driving and highway driving. real model is different affordable cost and attractive appearance.

  • Volkswagen Golf is best car on diesel fuel in the middle class. In terms of sales, it leads the world market. Can be equipped different options turbocharged engines with a volume of 1.6 to 2 liters. This brand has high power along with excellent fuel economy.

  • The BMW 3-Series is the perfect solution for business man. The lineup includes several options for machines that are different in power and other parameters. Each consumer will be able to determine the best option for himself.

The most of the most

Diesel-powered vehicles may differ in power, economy and other characteristics. There are many ratings that call the best completely different vehicles. And this is an absolutely normal phenomenon, because everything depends on the audience being surveyed, the territory of the survey and the number of respondents. And the opinions of amateurs and experts also often have cardinal differences.

It is worth noting that in the matter of determining the best diesel passenger car, the opinions of many experts and ordinary drivers. The championship was unanimously given to the Volkswagen Golf. The car is considered comfortable, economical and reliable. It is equipped with 8-10 airbags.

The best crossover - Range Rover Evoque. It is considered practical and prestigious at the same time. It has a simplified configuration, excellent power and a high degree of safety. There is a version with three doors. It has a lighter weight and increased rigidity of the body, thereby optimizing the handling of the vehicle.

The most powerful passenger car with a diesel engine can be called the Audi Q7. It is equipped with a 12-cylinder engine with a volume of 6 liters. Its power reaches 500 horsepower. Despite the weight of 2.5 tons, this car is able to compete with modern sports cars. Up to 100 km / h, the car accelerates in just 5.5 seconds. This model is not available for free sale, but is made exclusively to order.

The best diesel-powered cars aren't always the most agile and capable of high speeds. The fastest of them is the BMW X6 crossover. It has an engine with 6 cylinders and a volume of 3 liters. The presence of three turbines allows a car with a capacity of 381 horsepower accelerate to 100 km in just 5.2 seconds. Max Speed this car reaches 290 km / h. Manufacturers don't stop there. They plan to release a car with four turbines in the future, the power of which will reach 390 horsepower.

The best diesel vehicles tend to have low fuel consumption. The most economical of them is the Seat Ecomotive. Fuel consumption is only 3.3 liters per 100 km in mixed mode. Despite the fact that the engine has a volume of only 1.2 liters, it cannot be called weak. Vehicles in the Ecomotive configuration, they can reach speeds of up to 175 km / h and accelerate to 100 km / h in 13 seconds.

Summing up all of the above, we can say that the future of the automotive industry lies with diesel engines. They are durable, reliable and economical. However, recently it turned out that in their exhausts there are substances that can cause cancer in humans. Therefore, engineers of world manufacturers will have to work hard and develop filters that would capture harmful substances and did not release them into the atmosphere.

Determining which engine is the best is not easy. Good and "Germans", and "Japanese", and "Americans. However, we have compiled a list of the most reliable motors and discovered the secrets of their longevity.

Among the drivers you can hear different opinions about which engine is the best. Some hold their hand for German reliability, others for Japanese durable quality. There is even a legend about a superdrive that doesn't break...

Experienced drivers claim that there are engines in the world, the reliability of which is expressed by a mileage of 500 thousand km or even 1 million km. Indeed, it turns out that such engines exist in reality. We are publishing a list that we have been assisted by by experienced auto mechanics. Naturally, we could not include all models of motors in the list, and we present to your attention only the 10 most famous and massive ones that have won competitions and are known all over the world.

The most reliable diesel engines

The fact that diesel engines are considered the most durable has long been known. About 10 years ago, it was difficult to imagine a sports car running on diesel fuel. However, even now diesels are purchased by those who travel a lot (the engine runs in optimal conditions). Old diesel engines are relatively simple to construct, besides, they are quite durable.

The OM602 diesel series has 5 cylinders with two valves per cylinder, and a mechanical Bosch injection pump. This handsome man quite deservedly takes the first place in our list (and not only in it) in terms of the length of the run and “indestructibility”. He stood on the assembly line for almost 2 decades - 1985 - 2002.

The engines did not have superpower - 90 - 130 hp, their advantage is precisely efficiency and reliability. Their predecessors, the OM617 generation, and their successors, the OM647 and OM612, also had an excellent reputation.

Such engines can be found on Mercedes with bodies W201 (MB190), W124, on Sprinter vans and T1, G-class SUVs. The mileage of many of these cars exceeds 500 thousand km, and the record holders have more than 2 million km! If you regularly monitor the out-of-order attachments and fuel equipment, then with such a motor you can ride for a very long time.

Engines from Bavaria are practically not inferior to the Stuttgart "brothers". These 6-cylinder engines, in addition to amazing reliability, are characterized by a very energetic disposition, which at one time contributed to a change in the opinion of drivers about diesel engines. Today, no one will call the BMW 330D E46 a slow car, now it is a driver's car - a powerful and high-torque car.

Having stood on the assembly line for 10 years (1998 - 2008), these motors, whose power fluctuated in the corridor of 201 - 286 hp. with., and was installed on most BMW designs of the past decade. On models three through seven, all vehicles were equipped with the M57. Sometimes they can also be found on the Range Rover - the Mumusik engine of this particular series.

No less legendary and widespread was the predecessor of the M57. The M51 series of motors stood on the assembly line from 1991 to 2000. Apart from some minor problems, in general, the motor, according to mechanics, behaved perfectly up to a run of 350 - 500 thousand km.

The most reliable gasoline in-line "four"

Russian drivers, as before, prefer gasoline engines. In winter, gasoline does not freeze, and the design of a gasoline engine is simpler. In our top diesel engines turned out to be relatively large, but among the "gasoline leaders" there will be smaller engines, ordinary in-line "fours".

The Toyota 3S-FE engine from the well-known S series opens the list. In it, this unit is considered the most reliable and unpretentious in operation. Characteristics - volume 2.0, 4 cylinders, and 16 valves - are very typical for engines of the 90s. The camshaft is driven by a belt, the injection is simple distributed. On the conveyor stood from 1986 to 2000.

Power fluctuated between 128 - 140 losh. forces. Later and more powerful versions of this engine - 3S-GTE and 3S-GE also have excellent specifications. The 3S-FE motor was on many Toyota cars: Toyota Celica T200 and Toyota Camry (1987-1991), Toyota Corona T170 and T190, Toyota MR2 and others, and 3S-GTE (turbocharged) also on Toyota Altezza, Toyota Caldina.

Observant mechanics note the extraordinary endurance of this motor, despite heavy loads and poor maintenance, a well-thought-out design and ease of repair. If such an engine is properly maintained, then the return will please you - 500,000 km without overhaul!

Japanese 2.0 gasoline engine from a well-known family. The first version rolled off the production line in 1982, and copies and successor models are made even today. At first, the engine had one camshaft (SOHC) with three valves per cylinder, however, starting in 1987, the world saw a new version DOHC with 2 camshafts. The latest version of this engine was installed on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX. In addition, the engines of the family were also useful for cars of other brands - Kia, Huyndai and Brilliance (China).

After a series of upgrades, the engine latest version has complex power systems, pressurization as well. The motor did not become easier to repair after the upgrades, but maintainability remained at an acceptable level. The number of "millionaires" included only naturally aspirated versions, although turbocharged engines have, comparable to competitors, an excellent resource.

And this Japanese family included about 10 varieties of engines with a volume of 1.2 - 1.7 liters, for which the glory of "indestructible" was deservedly entrenched. Years of their production - 1984 - 2005. More reliable than other versions of the D16 and D15, characterized by high tachometer performance and reliability.

The power of these "Japanese" reaches 131 horses, and the number of working revolutions - up to 7,000. Motors were used on Stream, Accord, Acura Integra, HR-V and Honda Civic. With a small working volume and a lot of "patience", the engine resource before overhaul of 500 thousand km is considered excellent, and an optimally designed mechanism can provide a chance for a second life up to about 350 thousand km long.

The top of the best "fours" completes the engine made in Europe - x20se. This member of the GM Family II family gained universal fame due to the fact that he lived longer than cars that provided movement.

Its design is simple: 8 valves, belt camshaft drive, plus simple system injection distribution. This ensures its durability. Like the Japanese "brothers", it has a volume of 2 liters and the same ratio of bore to piston stroke as the 3S-FE - 86mm x 86mm.

The power of different variations of the model ranges from 114 to 130 hp. Motors did not leave the assembly line from 1987 until 1999, and were useful for the following models: Omega, Frontera, Calibra, Kadett, Astra, Vectra, Holden (Australia), Oldsmobile and Buick (USA). And for Brazilian drivers, they even made a turbocharged version of the engine - Lt3 (165 hp).

The famous 16-valve C20XE model was installed on chevrolet cars and Lada for participation in the WTCC races, where it proved to be just excellent, its turbocharged version C20LET is rightfully (based on participation in the rally) recognized as one of the most successful and simple.

For simple versions of the motor, the half-million milestone without overhaul is not the limit. Moreover, with proper care, the result of 1,000,000 km does not seem fantastic. But the C20XE and X20XEV models (also 16 valves) are not so hardy, although with their logical and simple design you can drive for quite a long time.

The most reliable V-shaped "eight"

In passenger cars, V8 engines cannot boast of high mileage without overhaul. The complexity of the layout and the lightness of the design do not make the motor more reliable. This characteristic does not fully apply to American V8s, but this is a special conversation.

To tell the truth, the number of V-shaped motors that are not prone to breakdowns and have a resource of more than 500 thousand km is not very large.

Reliable bavarian engines- again in the top. Having made the first passenger V8 in many years, the Germans did not disgrace themselves: a nickel coating of cylinders, a two-row chain and an outstanding margin of safety. A small degree of forcing plus excellent design work became the guarantee of a durable motor.

Nickel-silicon coating (Nikasil) strengthens the engine cylinders so much that they have gained fame as wear-free. "Running" half a million kilometers, in such a motor, even piston rings no need to change. But the super-strong nikasil coating is negatively affected by the sulfur in the fuel. And after a series of cases of damage to motors in the United States, the use of this coating was abandoned, preferring the Alusil technology, which is "delicate". Similar engines are on the BMW 7th and 5th series, released in 1992 - 1998.

A simple design, enviable power and a margin of safety allow such motors to easily overcome the milestone of half a million kilometers. But do not fill the tank with high-sulphur Canadian gasoline ... The M62 engines developed later were an order of magnitude more complicated and, of course, less reliable. They are strong enough, but break, yet noticeably more often.

The most reliable gasoline in-line "six"

A striking fact: among the millionaires there are a lot of in-line six-cylinder engines. Simplicity of design and balance (no vibrations), as well as power - guarantee a resource and reliability.

These engines of 3 and 2.5 liters have become almost legendary. Their excellent resource and lively character are evident. They were produced in various versions for 17 (!) Years - 1990 - 2007. There are also their turbocharged versions - 2JZ-GTE and 1JZ-GTE.

With us, they are common in the Far East, the land of right-hand drive "Japanese". Among others, 2JZ and 1JZ were installed on Supra, Crown, Chaser, Toyota Mark II, as well as the GS300 and Lexus Is 300.

Atmospheric versions of these engines are quite capable of overcoming the milestone of a million kilometers, the guarantee of which is a simple and intelligently designed design, as well as an enviable quality of their workmanship.

The history of this excellent engine began back in 1968. And his various modifications produced right up to 1994!

Their working volume ranges from 2.5 to 3.4 liters, and the power is in the corridor of 150 - 220 liters. With. The most simple design: timing chain drive, cast iron block, 12-valve aluminum block head, although there is sports option M88 with 24 head valves.

The M30 also has a turbocharged version, although the turbine only accelerates engine wear. And the M102B34 engine is the same M30, “armed” with a turbine with a power of 252 hp.

Engines of the M30 series are on cars of the 5th, 6th and 7th series of several generations. Run records among these engines were not recorded, but the result of 500 thousand km for them is almost ordinary. And if you take into account the difficult handling of rear-wheel drive cars of that time, then most of the power units ended up in a landfill not at all due to wear and tear.

The M50 series engines continued the tradition worthily. Engine capacity - 2.5 liters and 2.0 liters, power - 150 - 192 hp, also a cast-iron cylinder block, but the head - with only 4 valves per cylinder. In the later series, an interesting VANOS gas distribution system was installed.

Such beauties will not drop their reputation and will travel half a million kilometers without any problems. The situation with the M52 is somewhat worse due to the nikasil scandal. This motor has a more complicated design, more breakdowns, and a shorter resource, although the reputation has remained good.

Operating mode and mileage

Naturally, the mileage is very dependent on its operation. When taxiing, the motor very quickly winds up a large mileage. And if someone argues in this case that, they say, "200 thousand km in 3 years without problems", then with real resource engine such phrases have little in common. After all, when working in the “taxi” mode, wear and tear and the number of breakdowns are minimal.

Coffin the resource of the motor long downtime in traffic jams, cold starts, frequent driving with a “slipper on the floor”, as well as using a car in countries with severe climatic conditions. Therefore, in our top there are no new engines that have clocked 500,000 km in a couple of years. Indeed, with a sparing mode of operation, this will not be a serious evidence of their reliability.
