I immediately limited the purchase budget to 400 rubles, because... The house, at a minimum, requires major renovations, and my income does not allow me to pay a loan for a car and invest in a house.

I wanted a universal car - something that could fit a family (3 people) and a useful load for the house (cement, concrete mixer, stone, walk-behind tractor, remove snow, etc.), also preferably something passable to travel around our Ural beauties, where there are no normal roads - Zyuratkul, Arakul, Yurma, Kialim, etc.

The car is needed as a weekend car (they take me to work), i.e. Reliability is not the main thing. Also, from time to time I like to tinker with the car, for example, I always made the music and noise myself, it’s not a problem to inject the suspension, etc. Besides, I wanted a new car.

In general, very few options suited such requests - my wife insisted on the Patra Pickup, I insisted on the Farmer, we considered the pros and cons:

Patriot is closer to modern jeeps, the loaf is purely utilitarian vehicle for heavy road conditions. And in appearance, these cars look like they are from different centuries.

But in the end, my practicality took over, it was decided - Farmer.

Came to the nearest official dealer UAZ in our region, where when asked if there is a Farmer, the manager says 4 units are on the way, but leave a deposit, because... There are a lot of people willing, 2 have already been prepaid and 2 more will be sold out within a week.

I left a deposit, immediately refused all the additional extras offered, and a week later I left the showroom in a new 390945 in the color “white night” (some kind of grayish white, not metallic)))

First impressions

What did I buy?! The doors close terribly (the service didn’t fix the situation within an hour, so they took it away). I found several cracks in the paintwork on the body, and rust had already appeared on some of them!

On the move - a cross between a truck and a tractor - the engine growls, the transfer case howls, the gearbox echoes them, the steering wheel is heavy, the suspension is just wooden, there is no clarity in the gearbox, you can’t even engage 3rd!

On the highway it’s comfortable 70-80, after that the engine noise begins to tire, after 100 km/h it’s impossible to talk anymore! Maybe the 5th would have corrected the situation, but it doesn’t exist.

The salon – I knew it was spartan, but not that much! About ergonomics... - it simply doesn’t exist! Here are just a few of the points that struck me most:

The stove is something: 2 fan speeds - noisy and very noisy (even louder than the engine at a speed of 100 km/h!), the driver and passenger are directed to the feet by a pipe, each of which is closed by a small flap inside - just separate climate control !))) Under the panel there is a “recirculation” lever that raises the oval damper in front))) When it’s really hot, you can open a special hatch from below the stove and all the heat will go directly under the stove, but what! In general, the stove is terribly primitive, noisy, but warm.

“Torpedo” is simply made of iron, with dirty blue dermantine leather on the side panels. All the minimal interior trim is on bare screws.

To be fair, it should be noted that there is a hydrocorrector for the headlights and variable brightness of the instrument lighting.

As a person who is familiar with UAZs mainly from reading forums on UAZbuka and having driven a little in Patras, my first thoughts are: what did I buy?!

The next day, having previously studied the UAZbuka, I drove it into the pit to stretch it - in principle, everything important was tightened normally. I adjusted the gearbox drive, checked everything - the gears began to engage more or less, the steering wheel became lighter. The oils in the engine and axles are normal, everything is beautiful - dry and clean. The transfer case is sweating - it turned out that the level is higher than necessary (probably the same as in the gearbox), and the cover is not tightened - I tightened it. Other fluids are normal.

The design of the door locks, like everything else in this car, is simple - disassembled, lubricated, adjusted, assembled - they began to close normally for an UAZ.

First off-road

Patency for standard tires(KAMA-219) is not bad - it rushes normally on shallow virgin snow, digs in when turning, but jumps out easily from swings.

The oak suspension is absolutely impenetrable and in general off-road the car feels strong and indestructible. On large potholes it jumps elastically, with some kind of indifference not only to the road, but also to the passengers. Regardless of the quality of the road, nothing rattles or rattles, maybe because of the general background noise, or maybe because there’s simply nothing, only the springs in the seats under the riders creak.

Engine

Bad! It doesn’t pull very well at the bottom, but if you don’t hesitate to put pressure on the trigger and twist it, it tears! This is not very good off-road, but on the highway the dynamics for such a cart are impressive; it feels close to front wheel drive vases! And this is on a strangled 409.10 engine, but what if you change it to dynamic firmware or even just to Patriot firmware?!

In general, the engine with a 16-valve plate under the hood, hydraulic compensators and a 17th BOSH hanging on the wall looks like a foreign body in this archaic car.

The seats are comfortable and, despite only 1 adjustment (backrest tilt), I quite like the driving position, maybe because I am of average height (177) and the loaf was designed just for it?!

The steering wheel is tightly screwed, but it’s nice to grab onto it, throwing your body into the cabin, and fold your hands on it on the road. Visibility forward and to the sides is good. Back, despite the large mirrors, it’s so-so, I still can’t get used to the dimensions of the body.

Rear seats

On the 2nd row there is a sea, 3rd big men in winter clothes - easy. Backseat soft, comfortable enough for short trips. His back rises and is suspended from the ceiling by straps and forms a second reserved seat. sleeping area! But how can you sleep on it when the ceiling is 40 cm?!

On the run

Despite the archaic suspension, it holds the road well - at least at speeds up to 100 km/h (I haven’t given it more yet) the car is moving smooth, no steering required.

UAZ didn’t bother with the suspension - axles on springs with 4 cushions and 4 shock absorbers and no stabilizers, rods, supports, ball or other silent blocks, only excessively stiff springs. But in addition to simplicity, reliability and maintainability, such a scheme also has a big disadvantage - minimum comfort - the car is tough and rude.

Exploitation

I installed it right away for testing electronic tachometer– BK-06 (total 550 rubles).

Consumption per 1000 km. according to the receipts it was only 12-13 l./100 km, which I think for an untested UAZ, with the front end on, is very little in winter (although I don’t rule out that I miscalculated somewhere).

Rethinking after 1000 km. mileage

The first shock passed and... I'm starting to like the UAZ more and more! With its rough, primitive, oak, but honest and simple design! Everything is simple, strong and clear.

I’m used to the steering wheel and gearbox, and to the “ergonomics” too.

And under it they installed a pair of modern steering column switches. Before there was one, a tractor type; it took incredible effort to flip it. Relays and fuses no longer play hide and seek - they are combined in a single block. Trifles? An unpretentious client will be happy with these little things that make the car more convenient.

As before, there is a boulder in the middle of the cabin engine compartment. But if previously it was covered with a thin layer of leatherette, now the surface is covered with carpet, which insulates much better from noise. For the sake of silence in the cabin, the ceiling was covered with needle-punched material: the sound passes through the holes and dissolves there. But this is in theory - but in reality? I’ll check now, fortunately I have a Farmer with a two-row cab.

Out of habit, I poked the key into the front panel and almost scratched it: the ignition switch was not in the old place - I moved to steering column. A second, and the engine comes to life, filling the interior with a light velvety hum. It really became quieter!

According to our measurements, the level of internal noise decreased by 5–10 decibels, depending on the driving mode. By 2016, we adapted the engine to Euro-5 econorms. In preparation for the new standards, the engine control program had to be rewritten, after which it began to work more balanced, and most importantly, fuel consumption was reduced. Compared to the previous Farmer, the new one starts calmly, without convulsions or shudders - it picks up speed happily. The clutch, however, grabs at the very top. But it’s okay, I got used to it. I also got used to the sweeping shifts of the five-speed manual.

The ride quality and energy efficiency of the suspension are impressive. The Farmer passes even the monstrous-looking pit with barely noticeable swaying. That's why in regions with bad roads Ulyanovsk cars are so valued! They also love UAZs for their excellent cross-country ability. I was running around like crazy through the back streets of the factory territory in order to park the car. In vain. He overcame all the proposed obstacles using only one rear wheel drive. I only had to connect it a couple of times front axle, but it didn’t even come to downshifting.

For those for whom the all-terrain qualities of the UAZ are not enough (there are some), starting in July they will be offered a version with a rear cross-axle differential lock. A jeeper's dream!
