Newest convertible Mercedes-Benz S-Class turned out to be perhaps the most comfortable open-top car in the world. The Germans are not at all afraid to claim that in terms of luxury and driving pleasure this car has surpassed even the recognized British aristocrat Bentley Continental G.T. Minimum price

Maximum price

The most interesting part of the convertible is the soft fabric top. The level of its engineering and design performance is so high that the silhouettes of the convertible and coupe are completely identical, even despite the difference in body design. In addition, the area of the textile “hood” is not just impressive - the Mercedes-Benz S-Class actually has the largest production folding roof in the world!

Here's what the manufacturer himself writes about the new S-Class Cabriolet:

What is the price of freedom? The new S-Class Cabriolet provides the answer to this question: maximum. This is the Mercedes that turns car trip into an invaluable - from an aesthetic point of view - experience. It is so stylish, so luxurious, that its opening convertible top resonates with the eyes and hearts of true car enthusiasts.

When has opening the roof ever given so much joy? So much elegance, so much style. Even with low temperatures even in gusty winds, the new S-Class Cabriolet makes open-air driving possible in comfort and style.

Here we have one of those cases when it is difficult to argue with the philosophical formulations of factory marketers. True, with realities Russian conditions exploitation is even more difficult to argue. Who knows how long the presentable appearance of the textiles will last under the influence of a road suspension of salt, dirt and reagents if the owner decides to use the S-Class Cabriolet in winter (from the point of view of warmth and comfort, nothing interferes with this)? No one is safe from vandals and car thieves here either: although fabric roofs are made from especially durable multi-layer materials, they still won’t survive mechanical impact from a sharp object.

The base color of the fabric upper is black. Judging by the configurator, you don’t need to pay extra for the more noble dark red, blue or beige roof options.

And in general, a fabric “awning” is much more susceptible mechanical damage than a classic steel coupe roof - the fabric can simply get dirty, accidentally damaged by branches or spoil the appearance improper care or unsuitable chemical compounds at the car wash.

So? - Does a big roof mean big expenses? In the case of luxury convertible Mercedes-Benz You don’t even have to doubt it! However, we decided to check the exact cost figures for the new convertible top (without frame and folding mechanism) with official dealers stamps in Moscow.

It turned out that a multi-layer textile fabric (with various fasteners, clips and other small things) for the open S-Class in the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC version costs as much as 439,870 rubles. It should be taken into account that the work of replacing the top on a folding frame is very labor-intensive, and therefore not cheap - 63,000 rubles. The final amount was impressive - 502,870 rubles!

The demand for cars with retractable roofs in Russia, although small, is stable. In the pre-crisis years, 700 cars were found by buyers; in 2015, demand fell to 480 units, but then went up again: last year’s result was 530 convertibles and roadsters sold. Although there are much fewer relatively affordable models: the open Peugeot 308 CC, Volkswagen Eos and Ford Focus Coupe-Cabriolet. We do not supply BMW 2 series, Audi A5, Volkswagen Golf and Mazda MX-5.

The largest range of openers in Russia is offered by the Daimler concern: six models, including the most affordable car without a roof on the market - tiny. Although it cannot be called a full-fledged convertible: behind the seats there is a powerful arch, combined with rear pillars. But the soft roof is electric and folds in 12 seconds. Base A smart convertible with a 900 cc turbo engine (90 hp) and a “robot” costs 1.1 million rubles, and a 109-horsepower version costs 1.49 million.

Range Rover Evoque Convertible

You can still order four-seater convertible with a fabric roof that folds in 20 seconds. Prices start at 5.0 million rubles per BMW version 640i (320 hp) with rear wheel drive, but there is also all-wheel drive versions. And already in next year BMW “eight” should appear, which will be offered in coupe and convertible bodies.

BMW 6 series

The roadster can be bought for 5.23 million rubles, its soft roof is retracted in 12 seconds, but base motor- two-liter turbo-four with a power of 300 hp. The version with a V6 compressor engine (340 hp) is a little more expensive - from 5.88 million. There are three more versions in the range with more powerful motors, and at the top of the range - (575 hp) for 10.8 million rubles.

TO open cars can be considered, because the central section of the roof is manually removed, turning the coupe into a targa. The initial Corvette Stingray (466 hp) is offered for 6.35 million rubles, and the extreme one (659 hp) is estimated at 8.8 million.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

The initial SL 400 (367 hp) with a V6 engine costs 6.6 million rubles, and the eight-cylinder SL 500 (455 hp) can be bought for 8.1 million. Next in the hierarchy is a supercar: a roadster with soft roof(retracts in 11 seconds) and a V8 turbo engine (476 hp) in Russia is offered at a price of 8.8 million rubles.

There are several power options to choose from, all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, and the top version Turbo S Cabriolet (580 hp) is estimated at 14.3 million. In addition, there is Porsche 911 Targa, in which the central section of the roof is retracted under the rear “hood” in 19 seconds. In the summer, convertibles of the most popular types drive along our roads. different types: roadsters, speedsters, phaetons, targos... Even when the thermometer drops to zero and below, not all convertible owners switch to classic cars. There are a lot of questions and contradictions, so let’s talk about everything in order.

Why do Russians buy convertibles?

A flat, slightly winding road, framed by green forest. Blue sky, bright sun... A snow-white BMW Cabrio emerges from around the bend. The driver's hair is gently ruffled by the wind, his light scarf flutters in the wind. A stunning passenger enjoys the fresh air, casting flirtatious glances at the car owner...

Often this is the picture that drives car enthusiasts who want to buy a convertible. You can even do it without a passenger - it will be great too. We have made a selection interesting facts about cars with convertible and their fans:

Fact 1. Convertibles are preferred by extroverts. The car is too noticeable and easy to find. Everyone can and wants to look into a convertible, the car owner knows about it. He strives to show status, opportunities and simply attract attention. Cars with an open top especially attract girls - the owner can’t get away from making new acquaintances. That’s why 9 out of 10 owners in Russia are men. Free as the wind or family-oriented, but loving the drive.

Fact 2. Owners of convertibles claim that there is much less noise in a car without a roof than in ordinary car With open windows. The noise from oncoming traffic is barely perceptible and does not blow into the ears.

Fact 3. The most desperate ones do not raise the roof in the rain - they say that small drops are simply blown away at speeds of 50-60 km/h. In early spring or late autumn (when the temperature is at or slightly above zero), convertible owners put on warm scarves, turn on the stove to maximum and enjoy the smells of the off-season: thawed earth, rotting leaves.

Fact 4. In the heat of the scorching sun, driving a convertible is less comfortable than on a cool, cloudy day. That’s why convertibles are so popular in Scandinavian countries, as well as in the UK. But they don’t like it at all in the Emirates, Egypt and other hot countries. The sun's rays are absorbed not by the roof of the car, but by the head, shoulders and back of the owner, so a light shirt, as well as a hat or cap is indispensable.

Fact 5. Some Russians manage to drive convertibles all year round for several years. From the snow strong wind and rain are saved with the help of a “stove”, a car roof, hats and gloves. Sooner or later, extreme sports enthusiasts get tired of the car, and they buy a new convertible.

Problems for convertible owners

Owning a convertible is not as smooth as the owners of these cars describe. There are a number of problems:

Dirt, grime, exhaust, and dust. They get stuck in cracks, collect in the car's interior, on the clothes, hair and face of the car owner. You will have to have a cloth at hand at all times. And for upholstery in light shades, order dry cleaning.

Fear. Many convertible owners are initially afraid to leave the car on the street with the top or soft top open. A parking lot near a large supermarket is a paradise for thieves, vandals and other dubious characters, so the fear is well founded. The roof can be cut, and debris can be thrown into the interior. Such cases are rare, but they do happen.

Low seating position and poor visibility. Drive a convertible Russian roads- it's not an easy matter.

The fourth drawback will not please barbershop regulars. A convertible won't let you keep your hairstyle- the wind blows all the time. Yes, and you will have to wash your hair often because of the instant street dirt.

Weather. Still, for heavy rains or hail, a convertible is not the best option for transportation. Only if with a closed hardtop. And to do this, most cars have to stop and raise the canopy.

Season. In winter, you will have to turn on the stove to maximum and keep it in this state longer, because... In the cold, the convertible's interior cools down quickly, but heats up with difficulty. In addition, if during the cold season moisture gets into the roof opening mechanism, causing it to freeze, the repair will cost a pretty penny.

Any convertible repair, not just the roof. Nobody has ever sold it for less than 50-100 thousand (depending on the make and year of manufacture of the car).

Tiny trunk. It is observed in most convertibles, with the exception of retro cars. It will not be possible to go shopping or take the children to school.

Misunderstanding from others. A convertible is an impractical car; driving it to work or in the cold season is considered bad manners, “empty show-off.”

How often do Russians buy used convertibles?

To clearly show the history of purchases of open-top cars in Russia, we turned to statistical figures.

Quantity

Thus, according to the Autostat agency, in 2017 Russians bought about 600 convertibles, which is 0.03% of the entire secondary car market. Moreover, in Europe, cars with open tops are bought almost 100 times more often - 2.8% of convertibles have found their home on European soil.

Color

Russians more often put up white cars without a top for sale - 30% of all ads. It is easier to sell and buy such cars than other colors. Next in popularity of sales and purchases are black cars, as well as of blue color- 25%. You can rarely buy a car in bronze, cherry, light green and pink colors.

Stamps

Among the leaders in purchases and resales of convertibles in our vast territory were only 5 brands:

  • BMW (15% of all purchases);
  • Mercedes-Benz (11%);
  • Smart(10%);
  • Peugeot(8%);
  • Mazda(6%).

Other brands, such as Porsche, Volkswagen, MiniCooper, Audi, Opel, are rare here, but are in demand.

Models

2 used models are especially popular in Russia BMW: Z4 and 1Series Cabrio. Both can be found in adequate condition for under a million rubles. These will be cars manufactured in 2005-2008, with mileage from 50 to 150 thousand kilometers. Only the engines will differ: under the hood the Z4 has 2.5 liters with 192 hp. or 3 liters with 231 hp. The “unit” is slightly less powerful: 2 liters with 143 or 170 hp. or 3 liters with 218 hp.

Second only to BMW in popularity Mercedes-Benz SLK. This is a compact roadster (double saloon). For up to 1 million you can buy a good version from 2006. 1.8 liters, 163 horsepower with a mileage of 50 to 100 thousand km attracts drivers. In addition, Mercedes have an “air scarf” function - warm air blows from the headrests onto the neck of the driver and passenger.

Another favorite of Russians is the tiny Smart For Two Cabrio. Rear drive, short wheelbase and hood - you can park in the city without any problems. Economical liter engine with 82 or 102 hp. For 1 million it’s easy to buy a car with a mileage of 20-30 thousand kilometers.

The next most popular is the Peugeot 207CC. This is a convertible coupe. For 1 million you will find a car with 60-70 thousand km mileage. Under the hood is 1.6 liters, 120 horses.

Those who cannot afford the 207th model take Peugeot 206 SS. This car is already considered old - it was produced in 2002-2004. But Europeans like it - the car is reliable and structurally sound. 2 engines: 1.6 with 110 hp, as well as 2 liters with 135 hp. The best part is that such a car costs secondary market 250-380 thousand rubles. There are also more expensive ones, but this is the impudence of the sellers.

The Mazda MX-5 Roadster closes the rating. The only car on this list from Asia. You can find an adequate version made in 2011 with a mileage of 28-50 thousand kilometers. Under the hood there will be a 2-liter engine with a power of 160 horses. Prices start from 900 thousand rubles.

What do convertible owners hide?

Often, owners of convertible cars hide unsightly facts from the car's history behind an external gloss. For clarity, we checked 10 used convertibles, which we found on car sales websites, using the Autocode service, and found out several patterns. So, convertible sellers:

  1. Concealing participation in an accident

Half of the cars looked at were in an accident at least once, which the seller either does not talk about or blatantly lies that there were no accidents. The seller of this car assures that the car is undamaged. How is this possible if the check revealed 2 accidents involving a car at once?

The causes of accidents are different - leaving the road, collision. Apparently, the sellers do not know that the car can be “punched” through the Autocode database and they lie that the car has not been in an accident.

  1. They often lose their car through confiscation

Without exception, all convertibles we looked at were confiscated from the owner at least once. Perhaps it came to the division of property or non-payment of taxes, alimony, and utility debts.

  1. They don't drive the car for long, they resell it

Most cars have 5 or more owners. Even 10 or 12 of them can be entered. These are, of course, cars 18-20 years old, but even for even 12 owners, this is a lot for that age.

Some cars change owners several times in 1 year. And this raises questions and suspicions about the technical serviceability of the convertible.

There are also other problems, such as long mileage or frequent repairs without involvement in an accident. Also, convertible owners often receive fines for speeding, but pay them. Eat rare cars with serious legal problems, such as traffic police restrictions. If you check a convertible before purchasing, it won’t be difficult to protect yourself from a bunch of problems.

Are convertibles needed in Russia?

Motorists, experts, and even the owners of cars without a roof themselves admit: a good convertible is a car that is not particularly practical or affordable. The salon is often small. Even if there is a second row of seats, it is woefully small. As is the trunk. Well, at least the interior trim is better in 9 out of 10 cases than the model with a roof. The design and weight distribution of a convertible differs from a standard car - there is no roof. Therefore, in order to make a machine of a different format, automobile plant forced to change the conveyor settings or launch a new one, which is not in the best possible way differs on the price of the convertible.

Pros and cons of owning a convertible

Based on all the nuances, we come to negative conclusions. For example:

But there is also positive points. So:

  • The convertible will not be stolen, because... The car is too noticeable and easy to find.
  • Cars without roofs attract the attention of girls; it is easier for the owner of a convertible to make new acquaintances.
  • The owner is guaranteed positive emotions from driving on open roads with the roof folded down - a fresh wind and the sky above distract you from the stuffy and smoky city.
  • A convertible conveys owner status in the same way as a premium SUV.
  • A car without a roof can easily become a way to make money: bright, expensive or simply unusual convertibles are welcome guests at photo shoots.
  • If the cabrio's interior is made of dark leather, its owner is lucky. This is an ideal combination where less dirt accumulates and is easier to remove.

There were more minuses than pluses. But for those who once tried to drive a convertible, it doesn't matter.

If you an exemplary family man If you have an average income or slightly lower, you don’t need this car. If only on credit and only on weekends summer days. But if finances and single life allow you to buy a convertible, why not take advantage of this opportunity? How you will use this machine, in what weather and time of year is up to you. You can afford repairs, even expensive ones.

Leave your opinion about convertibles in the comments after the article.
