After all, the off-road potential in this class is only slightly expanded in relation to the base models, and we will not compete on the principle of “who can sit down faster.” Once again about acceleration: of the trio, the noticeably weaker Audi “improves” its competitors with a noticeable advantage. Not only in dry numbers and not only in terms of actual maximum acceleration to “hundreds,” but also in response to the gas pedal in any range. And the point here is not only in the “correct” German turbo engine, but also in the S-tronic gearbox with two dry clutches. While competitors' machines decide to change gears, Audi robot it will not only “throw” a step or two down and up, but will also firmly connect the dual clutch discs, transmitting torque to all four wheels without the inevitable torque converter slippage.

Yachting. Lifting. Driving?

Volvo-driver is one of the nicknames in America and Europe. It means “brake”, “loshok” and “pensioner”. No matter how hard this company fights against its shameful image! And in addition to the emphasis on the safety of her cars (which certainly cannot be taken away!), she relied on a completely “driver’s” design.

As in other models of the concern, the XC70 maintains a special solemn silence even in motion - you can’t hear the street, you can enjoy the wonderful stereo and even hit your ears with the Dolby system, or you can just ride in silence, one on one with your favorite car.

But in the same way you don’t feel the external environment in the sense external dimensions- they get lost somewhere in the distance. The A-pillars, especially the near left one, steal part of the view - you have to move your body so as not to see a pedestrian or motorcyclist. Although, perhaps, someday in an unkind hour, it is these “fat” racks that will save the lives of you and your passengers. From the point of view of a comfortable seating position, Volvo carries with it the traditional lack of lateral support for the seats - even on small turns you “fall out” outwards. The scattering of small buttons is uninformative and is familiar only to regular users of the Volvo interface. The “start” button is not too noticeable - for example, in Subaru it is much more expressive. There seems to be a platform for the left foot, but it’s exactly “half a shoe” wide - a foot larger than size 44 will fall off from here.

What about drive? In one word? Damped. You press the gas - there is a response. But “half a moment” later than you expected. It’s the same story with transferring gears: the delays are not critical, but noticeable. The traction of the V-shaped “six” seems to be sufficient, but the acceleration of the car is not too intrusive. But the acoustics of the engine are a subject of special praise. In manual mode, everything falls into place - heavy, but powerful car comes to life and is among the first to run in the city. This means that the point is precisely in the “brains” of the box and the environmental “strangulation” of the speed gain.

In terms of handling - four plus. Light rolling slightly reduces the good response to the steering wheel. And in terms of suspension performance, the score is the highest - the car floats above the road, regardless of the quality of the surface. There are no breakdowns even on serious potholes.

Volvo XC70

The Swedish car is the only one of the test trio that has engine compartment the power unit is located transversely. Therefore, the torque goes to the rear axle, converted by the main gear. Even without measurements, it is clear that it is the bumpers that limit the ability of our test subjects to get off the road. Although it depends on what you compare it to. If you have a passenger car, then the extra 4–5 cm of ground clearance allows you to get to the dacha, go on a picnic, park near city snowdrifts or jump onto a high curb. What else do we need? To avoid scratching the plastic on the bottom. On all three models, these parts are “upholstered” in black or gray rough polymer material, which is not in danger of chipping the paintwork. It is also important that under the engine compartment of all three there is, albeit plastic, protection.

From the point of view of “bumps”, perhaps the Subaru is the least likely to catch the bottom of the snow and clay on a country road. Volvo pleases with its insensitivity to shaking - press on the gas and ride the waves. But Audi, the absolute leader in all disciplines, is clearly not eager to take the lead in off-road driving: the ground clearance is too low, the body kit is thinner, and it shakes out the soul on big bumps.

The agony of choice

I’ll tell you straight: in this case there are no problems with choosing a leader. Already at the beginning of the battle, the A4 allroad beats both competitors dry in almost all respects, although it is slightly inferior in cross-country ability. I’m not even sure that it’s necessary to spend money on an allroad, overpaying about 200,000 rubles. vs A4 Avant quattro. However, this is still a good product, and not at a premium. Subaru, to be honest, puzzled me. "How? Shaking, lack of style or cheap interior trim? - you ask. No. the main problem- price! If it were 20 percent (!) lower, I would be happy to contrast the individual shortcomings of this model with its many advantages, and first of all its fantastic handling. But at this price tag, the shortcomings are simply unacceptable.
